INA Lobby Day

2019 Date TBA

Embassy Suites Hotel, Des Moines

101 East Locust
State Capitol

The meeting space for 600 people has been reserved so please register in a timely manner to ensure a spot. The morning's events are from 8:50 am to 12:00 pm with a trip to the State Capitol in the afternoon. Registration fees will include a box lunch.

New this year:  The city parking garage is right across the street. It has over 500 spots.  The entrance is on East 2nd between Locust and Grand. The cost is $1/hour and can be paid with credit card as they leave or using a kiosk in the east stairwell (farthest away from the hotel).   Meter parking still surrounds the hotel.  With the opening of the parking garage, both Locust and Walnut Street meters have been opened back up to the public. The Grand Ave bridge is open and has two lanes of traffic open.  There is no parking on that bridge, yet.

You will need to take the D-Line Shuttle or another Dart bus to the Capitol.  There are 2 Dart buses that stop right by the Embassy and will drop you off at 12th & Grand.  The cost for those is fifty cents one way.   The Embassy Suites will not be providing transportation to the Capitol.  The Capitol Complex bus (D-Line) circles the Capitol Complex and is at no cost to its riders.

We encourage you to take the D-Line shuttle or walk to the Capitol to meet with your legislator.

What is your Elevator Speech?

An interactive process to learn how to communicate concisely with legislators.

The final session of the morning will allow nurses and students to interact in small groups to identify and practice effective advocacy strategies by analyzing one of INA’s public policy priorities or a specific bill.

This was a popular part of programing last year and provides a “hands on” learning experience. Examples of how to create your elevator speech, talking points and elevator speech templates are included.

Faculty, please encourage students to read and research one of INA legislative agenda items and its bullet points or a specific bill and create talking points that are individual to them. Preparation is important and will facilitate sharing and decision making. If you are traveling to Des Moines, take advantage of the car ride and talk through your approach. Phones and tablets are permissible resources during the session. Please make copies of the elevator templates to bring to the session for your students to use as a guide. There will be a couple of copies on each table.

At the end of the session, a representative from tables will volunteer to share their group’s talking points.  This provides practice for the “real thing” at the Capitol.
