Spokane housefire leaves 6 people without a home

The City of Spokane Fire Department received a call early Saturday morning about a house fire and a column of smoke visible from the Maple Street Bridge. Firefighters were dispatched at 3:03 a.m. to the house at the 900 block of West Maxwell. They arrived within five minutes of the report. The first engine to arrive reported heavy fire on one of the walls of the two-story house, reaching up to the house’s attic. Law enforcement advised that one person might still be inside.

State Officials Urge Space Heater Safety to Prevent Fatal Fires

As chilly temperatures demand more from our heaters, the risk of related fires climbs. Space heaters, a common source of warmth, are notably the main cause of home heating equipment blazes, as per the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). From 2015 to 2019, these fires have been responsible for an average of 45,800 incidents annually, with 480 civilian deaths and 1,350 injuries to show for it, alongside a billowing cost of one billion dollars in property damage.

In the Washington State, home heating equipment fires accounted for at least 4 fatalities in 2024. This has prompted the State Fire Marshal’s Office to recommend safety measures to prevent such tragedies. Key advice includes having furnaces serviced yearly by professionals and keeping combustibles a safe distance from any heating sources. In case a gas leak is suspected, it’s crucial to vacate the premises immediately and call 911 once outside.

Focus on space heater safety is particularly sharp. The State Fire Marshal’s Office suggests only using models equipped with an automatic shut-off to prevent fire in the event they tip over. They advise homeowners to plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, steering clear of extension cords or power strips. Overloading a single outlet with multiple devices, especially when one is a space heater, can also lead to danger.
