City of Ocean Shores Firefighter / Paramedic, Lateral Transfer

The City: 

The City of Ocean Shores, Washington is 1½ hours west of Olympia, Washington and is located right on the ocean. Ocean Shores is nationally known for having an excellent atmosphere for relaxation, maintaining an excellent quality of life, a low crime rate, and a fantastic area for fishing and hunting. The City is approximately 12 square miles and has 6 miles of beachfront and 26 miles of interconnected freshwater lakes and canals. Ocean Shores has approximately 6000+ full time residents and experiences nearly 5 million visitors annually. 

The Department: Ocean Shores Fire Department serves 6,000+ full time residents and five million annual visitors, providing all hazard response including; fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services over an area of approximately 12.4 square miles. The OSFD has an annual operating budget of $3.1 million and is staffed with a Fire Chief, Administrative Assistant, Fire Inspector, 18 career staff, and approximately 5 volunteers. The department operates through a central County wide 911 dispatch center Benefits: The Fire Department operates 4 paramedic units, 3 fire engines, 1 ladder truck, 2 brush engines, 1 rescue Humvee, and 1 support vehicle. These units are based out of 2 stations, one located at the south end of town and the main station centrally located near downtown. The Department is an ALS transporting agency working under the Grays Harbor County Medical Program Director. In 2018, OSFD responded to 2306 alarms with 85% of calls EMS related and 15% fire related. The OSFD has an automatic aid agreement and ambulance services agreement with its neighboring Fire District to the north, Grays Harbor District #7. 



 Schedule 48/96 

 Uniforms/Equipment: Initial uniforms / safety equipment provided; clothing allowance of $500 per year. 

 Medical/Dental/Vision: 92% Paid Premiums by the City of Ocean Shores; 8% Employee Contribution up to $120/month 

 Paid Holidays: Employee receives a check once per year for 11 holidays at twelve (12) hours of straight time. 

 Kelly Days: 24 hours of Kelly Time for each twenty-seven day work cycle to meet FLSA requirements. 

 Sick leave: 12 hours per month. 

 Vacation: 12 hours per month first 24 months; thereafter on an increasing scale. 

 Longevity Pay: 1.5% after 5 years; thereafter on an increasing scale every 5 years.. 

 Retirement through Washington State LEOFF II. 

 $75.00 / mo. contribution to the Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan hosted by the Washington State Council of Firefighters and $15.00 / mo. contribution to LEOFF II disability insurance plan.


Minimum Requirements: 

♦18 Years of Age 

♦Have a high school diploma or GED 

♦Must be a U.S. Citizen, Legal Resident, or Legally Eligible for Employment in the United States 

♦Valid Driver’s License with a history acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier 

♦No felony or criminal convictions within the last ten (10) years 

♦No outstanding warrants or charges pending in a criminal court 

♦Ability to read, write, and speak the English language 

♦Must have current Washington State EMT-P Certification at time of hire 

♦Minimum of one (1) year verifiable experience as a current full-time Paid Firefighter/Paramedic 

♦Successful completion of a probationary period at current employment 

♦If no Firefighter 1 Certification, will be required to participate in an approved IFSAC Fire Academy. 


Testing Process: 

Upon receipt of a completed application packet, candidates will be invited to attend an Oral Board Interview and Practical Skills Assessment. The Oral Board score, and Practical Skills Assessment score each will be weighted as 50% of the candidate’s final score. After successful completion of the initial testing process, eligible candidates will be invited to a Chief’s interview. A background investigation, psychological testing, polygraph, and medical exam will take place after conditional offer of employment. Veteran’s Credit may be available. If requesting Veteran’s Credit, please submit a DD214 Form with confirmation of attending Oral Board/Practical Assessment.
