The challenges facing leaders today are bigger, more complex and coming faster than ever before, with the volume of decisions needing to be made feeling like they are growing exponentially.  In this environment, unleashing a committed effort from every team member is no longer ‘nice to have’, it’s mission critical.

Think of it as an hourglass, with every grain of sand being a challenge to address or a decision to be made.  If you as the leader have to consider each of them alone, you are the crimp in the middle.  At best, you are slowing performance, at worst, guaranteeing failure. The need to fully engage, grow and empower your culture has never been more important.  The question is how?

The first recorded Washington State Line of Duty Death of a firefighter was on March 9th, 1891 when Seattle Firefighter Herman Larson was killed in a training accident on a peer.  Since that time 234 Washington State Firefighters have died in the line of duty.  On June 5th, 1991 Seattle Firefighter Donald Perry was the first presumptive cancer death.  Now, every year we gather around the state to lay to rest a fellow firefighter who has paid the ultimate price for their dedication, courage, and bravery.   Once a year on the first Sunday of June in Olympia, the Washington State Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service honors these heroes by placing a memorial ribbon upon a pike pole where they hang as a memorial to their memory so that we will never forget.

The Camas-Washougal Fire Department (CWFD) has been locked in a legal battle with the Department of Labor and Industries in 2018 that most departments across the state have heard about.  After fighting for a citation reversal for the better part of 10 months, our legal counsel is finally recommending we throw in the towel.  That decision will have to be made by our governing body later, but assuming we do give up our appeal fight, there are going to be significant and very expensive repercussions for small fire departments across Washington.  We estimate the costs of adhering to L&I’s staffing directive will be in the millions of dollars statewide.

On Dec. 4, 2015, the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act was signed into law. With the enactment of the FAST Act, state and local governments are now moving forward with implementation of the weight increases allowed for certain Emergency Vehicles (EV’s). It is with a heavy heart that the Washington Fire Chiefs, WFC Fire Mechanics Section and Camano Island Fire and Rescue announce the passing of one of our beloved members, Gabe Greaves. On Friday afternoon, while off duty, and at Larrabee State Park in Bellingham, Gabe tragically fell. He was 40 years old, a respected EVT at the Camano Island Fire Shop for 10 years, and a volunteer firefighter. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and two children at this difficult time.

More information about service arrangements will be released as it becomes available.

Perspective and what we focus on influences our outcomes.  As a technician, when a clock doesn’t work, we take it apart and look for that thing, the bad piece, the “bad apple” in the bunch.  We pride ourselves on quickly finding the problem and fixing the clock.  The greater picture, however, might be much more complex than is immediately apparent, much the way the formation of a cloud is many dynamic forces coming together, which ultimately create rain in the sky or a life-changing hurricane.  How we approach our work, looking for that one “bad apple” thing (clocks) or analyzing the big picture forces in a dynamic environment (clouds) will dictate our outcomes.
