Larry was clearly angry. Carl had used his tools (again) without asking, and even worse, hadn’t returned them (again). Larry told me he had given Carl some “tough feedback.”

He told Carl that he was self-centered and insensitive, and in the future he needed to ask for permission before borrowing anything.

He was surprised and indignant that Carl got angry with him.

Larry didn’t understand that telling Carl off is not “giving feedback.” It’s simply criticism. Setting boundaries around what Carl can borrow is a reasonable thing to do. But that’s not “feedback” either.

Feedback is providing information about your reaction to a product or to a person’s actions, to be used as a basis for improvement. Criticizing and setting boundaries are solely for Larry’s benefit, not Carl’s. Larry might have felt better by blowing off steam. But in the end, it did not lead to a satisfying conversation or resolution to the problem.

If Larry had really given feedback, it’s more likely he would have been heard and have gotten a thoughtful response...

In an ongoing effort to assist fire agencies, Labor & Industries is taking certain measures to help the Fire Agencies in new and unique ways. Labor & Industries has developed a premium calculator so Fire Agencies have the tools needed to better refine their budget estimates as it pertains to costs associated to Industrial Insurance. This tool also includes the projected experience rating for each of the Fire Agency to reflect a more refined estimate based on each agency's relative performance.

Written for firefighters by firefighters!

Written for firefighters by firefighters! This is not simply an advertising slogan — it is the
way that International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) manuals have been written and
validated for 80 years. In order to produce new and revised IFSTA manuals, a collaborative effort
is required between the staff members at Oklahoma State University’s Fire Protection Publications
(FPP) and members of the IFSTA validating committee assigned to that project.

IFSTA committee members are subject-matter experts from all areas of the fire industry who provide

assistance in reviewing and approving draft chapters for new manuals. Committee members
also provide assistance in obtaining research materials, photographs, and other information
needed to produce a finished manual. Committees typically complete their work in a one- to two year
time frame, during which two to four in-person and several electronic web-based meetings
may be held. Meetings held in conjunction with the July IFSTA Validation Conference are
attended at the member’s own expense. Committee members may be reimbursed by FPP
for transportation and lodging expenses for the IFSTA Winter Meeting.

Make plans to attend the 2017 Washington Fire Symposium, presented by the Washington State Training, Safety & Officers Section.  February 25- March 1, 2017; Yakima

We all know that in recent years, some organizations have cut back on conferences and events. It is known that during tough budget times, businesses that continued to spend on advertising and employee training fared better that those that did not. I believe the same holds true fire the fire service, both in public education and firefighter/officer development.
A great way to engage and be proactive is sponsoring staff to attend the Washington Fire Symposium. Centrally located, this symposium is somewhat close to home or requiring minimal travel. Attending the symposium, in-person, has the following advantages:

1. Get on your mark:

According to FEMA, the Assistance to Firefighters grant program will be opening in the near future.  Typically, they accept grant applications for 30 days.  This isn’t a lot of time to prepare your application.  So I suggest you begin now!

2. Get Set:
Determine what the AFG program will fund.  Last year’s guidance will give you a very strong indication of what FEMA will want to fund this year.  Only apply for “high priority” items, as determined in the guidance (medium and low priority items rarely get funded).  Email me if you need a list of the high priority funding items.
Find a match between what AFG funds and what your department needs:  What are your biggest operational threats?  What equipment do you urgently need to enhance fireground operations and firefighter safety?  If you would like brainstorm your grant request, you are welcome to give me a call.

Washington State Fire Chiefs along with their insurance broker, Shane Heston of Trask Insurance, are pleased to announce a new benefit to our member departments with 50k to 100k in assessed value.

Recently WFC partnered with Provident Insurance, a leading insurer for emergency services, to roll out a new 24 hour AD&D Accidental Death and Dismemberment group policy.  This group policy is intended to cover departments that are generally smaller in size and mostly volunteer.  The idea behind this benefit is to be included with membership with WFC and used as an incentive increasing volunteer benefits within both the department and WFC membership.
