As you are aware, WASPC notified you on June 10, 2016 that due to a funding shortage, Washington’s Critical Incident Planning and Mapping System (aka “school mapping”) would be suspended effective June 30, 2016. The Governor’s Office has made emergency funding available to enable us to continue the program through state fiscal year 2017, which begins July 1, 2016 and ends June 30, 2017. Because of this funding, the school mapping program will continue in its current form through that time period.

Although this funding provides a bridge to continue the program, there is no guarantee that program funding will be available after June 30, 2017. WASPC will again request that the legislature provide stable and ongoing funding for school safety programs.

We obviously heard from some stakeholders who were concerned regarding the proposed shutdown of the school mapping program. These stakeholders urged us to find a way to continue the program. We would ask those concerned about the continued viability of the program to become active during the legislative process and make your concerns known to legislators and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction...

Every dollar counts in today’s economy. While many companies are increasing prices, California Casualty is helping Residents in the Evergreen State by rolling back home and renters insurance rates. Effective July 1, 2016, the average savings will be 2%.*

You could realize even deeper discounts for newer homes, for those who use a preferred payment plan, and by bundling with your auto insurance.

California Casualty has been the provider of the Washington Fire Chiefs’ Auto and Home Insurance Program since 2009. Now the insurance company that gives Washington’s firefighters peace of mind is giving their budgets a break too.
“I have no doubt that these changes are going to make a huge difference to our WFC members and their families,” said California Casualty President Joe Volponi. “That’s why I am taking the time to urge every one of them to make it a priority to call California Casualty and get a quote with our new rates...

NFPA shares eye-opening statistics and recommends revelers attend public fireworks displays put on by trained professionals

As the Fourth of July approaches, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is reminding the public that there’s no safe way to use consumer fireworks. According to NFPA, coordinator of the Alliance to Stop Consumer Fireworks, U.S. fire departments responded to an annual average of 18,500 fires caused by fireworks between 2009 and 2013. These fires included 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires, 16,900 outside and other fires, and killed two people per year. Last year, two NFL players made headlines by losing fingers in accidents involving fireworks. The two separate high-profile incidents raised awareness about the dangers of consumer fireworks...

At a banquet that capped the group’s annual conference, the Washington Fire Chiefs (WFC) honored North Kitsap Fire & Rescue’s Dan Smith as Fire Chief of the Year on May 25.

Recently, a NPIP program member became the victim of an Internet phishing attack. For anyone wondering what this means, phishing is defined as trying to obtain financial or other confidential/private information from Internet users, typically by sending an e-mail that looks as if it is from a legitimate organization, but contains a link to a “fake” website that replicates the real one. More sophisticated phishing scams might even be disguised as communications from individuals within your organization.

Phishing has been the biggest financial threat on the Internet, but hackers are now going after far more than just financial information; they are targeting government and other large institutions in their attempts...

The key to surviving the fast paced world of today is that ability to accept and manage change. But making change stick is a difficult task. And when it comes to managing change in businesses the failure rate is high.

  • An IBM study “Making Change Work” of more than 1,500 practitioners worldwide found that only 59% of corporate projects miss at least one objective or fail entirely.
  • In 2008, a McKinsey survey of 3,199 executives around the world found that only one transformation in three succeeds.
  • An Economist Intelligence Unit study, sponsored by the Project Management Institute (PMI) found that less than half (46%) of executives their businesses are “excellent” or even “good” at executing initiatives and projects to deliver strategic results.
  • A 2013 Towers Watson Change and Communication ROI Survey found that only one out of four respondents (25%) say they are able to sustain gains from their change management initiatives over the long-term.
  • As you can see from these research results that making change stick is not easy. What can be done to improve on these results?

National Volunteer Week is coming up on April 10-16. This is a great opportunity to both recognize the achievements of your existing volunteers as well as alert the community to your department’s need for more recruits.

Volunteers are a crucial component of our nation’s fire service. 69 percent of firefighters are volunteers, and there are many additional volunteers providing support through local auxiliary programs such as Fire Corps or junior firefighter programs. However, a 2014 national survey by the NVFC showed 41 percent of respondents did not know if their local department used volunteers, and 79 percent did not know if their department was seeking new volunteers.

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) recently launched the Make Me A Firefighter recruitment campaign to help raise awareness among the public of the need for volunteers as well as provide departments with the tools and resources they need to recruit new members. Departments can register for free at portal.nvfc.org to post your volunteer needs and access customizable outreach materials, ready-to-use PSAs, a recruit tracking tool, and more. The portal is designed to be your one-stop shop to implementing and managing a local recruitment campaign...
