Position Overview 

The Deputy Chief of Operations functions as the  department’s third in command. Under the direction of the Assistant Chief, this position supervises, plans, coordinates and directs the day to day emergency operations. Candidate must be knowledgeable of current methods and standards of contemporary fire service and emergency response, as well as pertinent laws and standards. In addition, the Deputy Chief of Operations will participate as a member of the management team in establishing strategic goals, service level priorities, department policies, organization development plans, coordinate special projects, skilled in directing personnel and the Incident Command System, able to maintain focus and composure under varying levels of stress and deadlines, as well as meet the City’s standard for customer service and teamwork.

 Excel in providing executive leadership and guidance. 


Experience and Education 

Education - Associate’s degree in Fire Science, Fire  Administration or related field. 

Experience - (7) years or more of full-time continuous fire service employment, (5) years of increasingly responsible command and management experience at the Executive Officer Level (as a Fire Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief or Division Chief), or Battalion Chief, or any equivalent combination of experience, education and training. Expertise with Incident Command System is required. 

Desired Qualifications - Bachelor’s degree, possession of NFPA Fire Officer II or equivalent, completion of CPSE CFOD or National Fire Academy EFO program along with knowledge of leadership and management principles, methods and practices. Experience in an organization of similar complexity and population served preferred. 


Salary and Benefits 

$124,404—$140,004 DOE 


457 Deferred Compensation 

Vacation and Administrative Leave 

 120 hours vacation upon hire 

 96 hours per year (3.69 hours bi-weekly) 

 48 hours of Administrative Leave per year 

Sick Leave 

 80 hours sick leave upon hire 

 96 hours per year (3.69 hours bi-weekly)  

Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) 

 City Contributes $90 per month, tax-free 

City provided Life Insurance 

City provided Long Term Disability 

Department assigned take home vehicle 

Relocation Assistance may be available
