Skagit County Fire District 13 - Volunteer Firefighter

Job Duties:
Resident Firefighters are responsible for routine and emergency response, maintenance, housekeeping, training, public education and fire prevention. This program requires residents to live at the fire station. Residents are required to work a 1 on 3 off 24 hour shift rotation. Resident Volunteer Firefighters are Volunteer (no wages or rights of contract). Volunteer Resident Firefighters can receive up to $312 for a 24-hour shift stipend (depending on current IFSAC cert) when not a resident.

Minimum Requirements:
  • 18 years of age upon appointment
  • High School graduate (or equivalent)
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing the function of a Firefighter/EMT
  • IFSAC Firefighter 1/HazMat Operations within one year
  • National Registry EMT  
  • Agree to 1 year minimum commitment
  • Abide by all rules and regulations of the Fire District
  • Be Alcohol and Drug Free at all times while on Fire District Property

Completed application with letter of interest for the Volunteer Resident Firefighter position shall be submitted to the above address.  Current members should submit letter of interest only.

Fire District 13 of La Conner Washington is a rural community of 7,544 full time residents located between Mount Vernon and Anacortes Washington.  Close to hiking trails, crabbing, and water sports.

Skagit County Fire District 13 was established in 1958 as an all-volunteer organization. Today, Firefighter/EMT’s work shifts to cover the 71 square miles of the fire district. Working alongside 1 career member each day is a Resident Volunteer. The duty crew is supplemented daily by volunteers, both in the station and responding from home. The District responded to over 1,300 calls in 2019.   

The Fire District will supply the Resident Volunteer with living quarters while on duty consisting of a private bedroom in a single-story home to be shared with other resident volunteers.  

The purpose of the Resident Volunteer program is two-fold:

  1. To provide continuous 24/7 emergency responders on duty to respond to calls for service in Skagit County Fire District 13 and to assist our mutual aid partners as needed.
  2. To train the Resident Volunteer in all aspects of emergency services to give them an improved chance of securing full time employment in the fire or EMS fields.
