Okanogan County (WA) Fire District 6 Awards $5M Contract for Construction of New Fire Hall

The Okanogan County (WA) Fire District 6 has awarded Blew’s Construction Inc. of Spokane Valley a $5 million contract for construction of a new fire hall in Winthrop—with the stipulation that the facility will be completed in about a year, reports methowvalleynews.com.

The district plans to build an 11,954-square-foot station on a 5-acre parcel in the Horizon Flats neighborhood. The new digs will include six vehicle bays, a meeting room, a multipurpose room, a dormitory, a dining room, a kitchen, offices, and space for firefighter training.

The contract is for a total of $5,043,000, which includes an alternate option to add another vehicle bay, officials say. They add that the building’s cost will be covered by funds the district has on hand, a portion from a grant by the Betti Foundation, and anticipated proceeds from a 20-year bond made possible when district voters approved a levy lid lift in 2020 to help pay for the station.

The bid specifies that the new fire hall must be substantially completed 11 months after construction begins, and officials say site work will start soon and construction could begin in June.

No Luck: Shamrock (OK) Volunteer Fire Department Robbed of Nearly $5K Worth of Equipment

After two break-ins over the last two weeks, nearly $5,000 worth of equipment has been stolen from the Shamrock (OK) Volunteer Fire Department, reports newson6.com.

Officials say the thieves made off with winches, three leaf blowers, paint guns, and gas cans. The leaf blowers are essential when fighting brush fires, officials note, and the winches are desperately needed in case one of the trucks gets stuck.

Shocker: First All-Electric Fire Truck Stops in Howard County (MD)

The first all-electric fire truck in the states, the Rosenbauer RT, recently made a stop in Howard County (MD) on its way to Washington, D.C., reports Baltimore.CBSLocal.com.

The eco-friendly truck can run solely on battery power for two hours before a 6-cylinder clean diesel engine kicks on for a recharge. Officials add that the apparatus can raise up to about an 18-inch ground clearance and can drive through three feet of water.

In addition, passengers can launch a drone from the truck and have aerial photos sent directly to the driver’s seat. Its top speed is the same as traditional trucks—65mph—but the RT has a faster acceleration.

Officials say the RT will cost anywhere from $950,000 to $1.2 million, depending on its features.
