Submissions will be accepted from students at the city’s K-12 schools and the University of Southern Mississippi to name a fire truck, reports WDAM 7.

The truck was purchased at a cost of $459,900 through the capital expenditure budget for 2021. The truck will feature Southern Miss colors of black and gold with the golden eagle logo on its doors. 

As for the naming contest, students are encouraged to submit names that are easy to communicate and have ties to Southern Miss. The student who submits the winning name will be invited to attend the ceremony for the truck’s commissioning.

The city council has approved the submission of a grant for a fire truck, reports Sheridan Media.

The $450,000 grant, if awarded to the city, would fund the replacement of the city’s 36-year old fire engine, and would require a 5% local match from the city, or $22,500.

Statesville Fire Station 1 will be relocated after officials approved the purchase of land, reports Statesville Record & Landmark.

The purchase of the property from Statesville Housing Authority and construction of the new fire station is expected to cost more than $6 million.

Some city officials cited that they understood the need to move the fire station but had a preference for a prior setting that was eventually not pursued.

The move has been touted by the as a way to help cover any gaps in fire coverage as the city grows while also replacing the current Fire Station 1, which was built in 1952.

At a May town meeting residents will be asked to consider approvals for a number of initiatives, including a fire station, reports The Patriot Ledger.

Residents will consider approval for $550,00 for design and permitting of a new fire station. The project has to be “shovel ready” to qualify for possible federal funding assistance for construction.
