For the past 18 years, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue saved lives with what used to be a beer truck. Now, they're bidding it farewell for something bigger and better, an $800,000 heavy rescue rig.

The local fire department responsible for putting out surface fires at the Bridgeton Landfill says it's not equipped to handle a major fire at the site.

The Apple Springs Volunteer Fire Department received a $200,000 grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service that was used to purchase a large brush truck with an 800-gallon water capacity. The truck has a 10-gallon foam tank, as well as a remote control for the front bumper monitor, scene lighting and seating for five firefighters. The truck was put to work right away and has been used in several calls already, according to a press release.
