Charlotte (NC) Fire Department Chief Pete Key Installs New Orleans Smoke Detector

Charlotte (NC) Fire Department, Fire Chief Pete Key and New Orleans (LA) Superintendent Timothy McDonnell placed a friendly wager on the recent Wildcard Playoff matchup between the cities’ beloved Panthers and Saints. As a result, Charlotte Fire Chief Key had the opportunity to install a New Orleans Saints smoke alarm.

As part of the wager, The Buff Project, a New York City-based fire safety organization and distributor of officially licensed NFL Team Identified Smoke alarms, is donating 50 NFL licensed team-branded smoke detectors per game to the fire departments to use in their fire safety outreach efforts. Also during the NFL playoffs, for every NFL team-identified smoke detector sold on their website, The Buff Project will donate smoke detector to that city’s fire department.

Fire Engineering Chief Bobby Halton Interviews IAFF President Harold Schaitberger

Cancer is killing firefighters. In the past decade, more firefighters have died from cancer than running into burning buildings, saving communities from hazardous waste spills, or protecting neighborhoods from active shooter situations.

The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) is holding a national Cancer Summit focused on the latest science linking cancer and firefighting. Live from the summit in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger speaks live Fire Engineering Editor in Chief Bobby Halton about the issue of cancer and the fire service. Watch the interview, which will take place Wednesday, January 30, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern, in the player above.
