Rising Sun Regional Foundation awarded $35,000 and the John A. Hillenbrand Foundation allocated $10,000 for the replacement of a 25-year generator.

“This new generator is crucial for providing backup power and keeping the station operational especially in times of emergency or inclement weather,” Chief Todd Schutte said. “The previous generator was too small and inadequate to serve daily functions and we needed this to provide the best service for our citizens.”

Officials Break Ground on Fire Station 15 Replacement Facility

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services officials are hoping a replacement facility for its fire station in downtown Lawrenceville will provide some needed breathing room. The current Fire Station 15 facility that is located a block off of the Lawrenceville Square was built nearly 40 years ago and was meant to house a smaller group of employees.

Fire department Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the existing Fire Station 15 is 6,324 square feet in size, and has two bays for fire apparatuses. The new facility, he said, will have 10,788 square feet of space, three bays, a commercial grade kitchen, facilities for male and female employees.

Rutledge also said the new facility, which is expected to take about a year to build, will allow up to 12 employees to work on each shift whereas the currently facility can only accommodate a maximum of eight. Twenty-seven people work at the station.
