New Fire Station Opens

Bagpipes, a cool breeze and plenty of firefighters and family helped mark the grand opening Monday of Lawton's new fire station. Fire Chief Dewayne Burk and Mayor Fred Fitch performed the ceremonial uncoupling of a fire hose that linked Engine 8 to Engine 5, the last step in a morning ceremony that officially welcomed Fire Station No.

Not only does it have a dedicated fitness center for the firefighters stationed there (important because firefighters have to remain in good physical condition, he said), but the station also offers a confined space rescue training area that will allow firefighters and other city employees (most notably those in the Public Works Department's water and sewer divisions) to train for emergency situations such as a earthen hole collapsing.

'Rocket' Rod From Burning Car Smashes Maywood Fire Truck Windshield

MAYWOOD, N.J. -- A rod launched from a burning car engine whizzed past six Maywood firefighters before smashing the windshield of their truck Monday morning on Route 17. "That thing was like a rocket," Fire Lt. Roy DeYoung Jr. told Daily Voice.

Firefighters were stretching a line from the truck to reach the blaze beneath the vehicle's hood and dashboard, DeYoung said.

"We were 150 feet away and heard a pop. We thought it was a tire," he said. "Turns out it was an air piston shot from underneath the hood."
