Berea (KY) Council Approves Bid for Fire Apparatus

Berea (KY) Council Approves Bid for Fire Apparatus

The Berea City Council approved as bid for an E-One fire truck from Vogelpohl Fire Equipment for $743,600 during Tuesday night's meeting Berea Fire Chief Shawn Sandlin addressed the council in regards to the bid, noting Berea, Richmond and Madison County governments had all worked together on the proposal, which would obtain four fire apparatuses amongst them, one for each city, and two for the county.

During a fiscal court meeting held earlier in November, Madison County government approved the bid from Vogelpohl Fire Equipment, pending an approval by the Berea City Council.

Of the $743,600 price tag, CSEPP has offered to pay the city $400,000 toward the cost of the fire truck, according to Sandlin. There is also a $27,266 discount available for a 100 percent prepayment. This would leave the city to pay $316,334.

Sandlin said the Berea Fire Department would receive the truck sometime in December 2017.

Fort Atkinson (WI) Buying Fire Apparatus

The Fort Atkinson City Council on Tuesday accepted a $548,381 bid for the purchase of a new fire truck from Pierce Manufacturing of Appleton. Fort Atkinson Fire Chief Daryl Rausch explained the 1985 truck has rust and corrosion issues and repair parts no longer are available. In addition, the truck has a rear open-cab jumpseat that is not compliant with National Fire Protection Association standards. The cost will be covered by the city and five surrounding townships that utilize the department's services.

Based on a formula that emergency calls within the city account for 72 percent of calls, the city will cover 72 percent of the cost; the Town of Koshkonong, 16.8 percent, and the towns of Hebron, Sumner, Jefferson and Oakland, each 2.8 percent. The towns also contribute to repairs over a set amount on an annual basis.

The cost breaks down as follows: Fort Atkinson, $394,834; Town of Koshkonong, $92,127; towns of Hebron, Jefferson, Sumner and Oakland, $15,355.

Funds are included in the 2016 capital improvement budget. The intent is to make a prepayment with a savings of $21,607 and then borrow once the actual amount is determined.

The approved bid from Pierce was $537,628. Rausch requested that a 2-percent contingency be added to increase the total to the $548,381.

The purchase was approved 4-1, with council member Beth Gehred casting the lone "no" vote. She said that while she supports the fire department and public safety she felt it was not necessary to spend so much money on "things."

Cleveland Fire Department Gets New Fire Equipment

The Cleveland Fire Department is adding two new fire engines and one new aerial platform. Chief of Fire Angelo Calvillo explains the ladder truck will shoot one-thousand gallons of water per minute. This is a big investment in the fire department. More than $1.6 million worth of equipment was made possible by the 2014 bond issue.

The new trucks have reflectors and LED lighting that will keep the firefighters safe as they are on their way to emergencies. Those firefighters have had a chance to check out their new equipment.

"For the last three days we brought out our firefighters from both stations, station 30 and 23. They've been practicing on those pumpers," Calvillo said.

That's not the only new equipment on its way. The department is planning on getting two more pumper trucks in the next two months, and a new aerial ladder.

DNR Asking Washington State for $28 Million for Fire Crews, Equipment and Training

The Department of Natural Resources is asking Washington State for a $28 million package to fund new fire crews, better equipment, more training and rural support. As part of the new package, $19 million would build and staff 15 new fire engines and add 72 firefighters.

Another $5.4 million would provide equipment to rural fire districts that aren’t properly prepared for wildfires right now - a reality crews discovered while fighting the massive Carlton Complex and Okanogan Complex fires in 2014 and 2015. An additional $2 million would go toward training more firefighters, including some volunteers.

Right now DNR’s Capital Budget proposal is with the Office of Financial Management, which will review requests from departments around the state before Governor Jay Inslee finalizes his budget proposal in December. The Washington State Legislature could finalize their biennial budget in the first few months of 2017.
