Fire Engine Crashes into Minivan, One Injured

A 17-year-old girl was injured when a fire engine struck a minivan Monday morning in east Vancouver. The minivan spun into the fire engine's path following a collision in oncoming lanes, according to the Vancouver Police Department. The crash occurred at about 8:30 a.m. on Southeast 162nd Avenue near Seventh Street.

It all started when southbound driver Todd Anderson, 30, of Vancouver switched lanes to avoid hitting two vehicles that had stopped suddenly in front of him, Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp said. As Anderson switched lanes, his vehicle clipped a minivan in another lane, spinning the minivan into the path of the northbound fire engine, Kapp said.

Engine 10 was transporting a Vancouver Fire Department crew to their station after responding to a commercial fire on Mill Plain Boulevard, Vancouver Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Steele said. Steele said that the driver of the engine didn’t have time to avoid the collision.

“Our guys are pretty shook up,” Steele said. “We’re not supposed to hurt people. We’re supposed to help people.”

Wildfire Continues Burning in Mat-Su as Cold Complicates Firefighting Efforts

A late-season fire burning near Sutton remained mostly stagnant overnight, fire officials reported.

A late-season wildfire burning near Sutton in Alaska's Mat-Su region remained stagnant overnight even as strong winds and below-freezing temperatures made things tricky for firefighters and their equipment, fire officials reported.

A post Sunday morning on the Alaska Wildland Fire Information blog said that the fire was at 216 acres, the same figure reported Saturday night.

About 50 firefighters were battling the blaze, which was burning north of Palmer and about 5 miles south of Sutton, and prompted a precautionary evacuation of the Palmer Correctional Center on Saturday.

"The main focus today will be securing the north and east flanks of the fire," officials with the Alaska Division of Forestry said on Sunday. "Two helicopters equipped with water buckets will be used to support firefighters' efforts on the ground to keep the fire from spreading in either of those directions."

Car Crashes Into Durham Fire Station, No Injuries Reported

Nobody was injured after a car drove into a Durham fire station Monday afternoon. Authorities said that a female driver reported seeing a blinding light before crashing into Fire Station 14 at 1327 Umstead Road just after 4 p.m.

Officials said that bedrooms and a bathroom were behind the exterior wall the driver hit and one firefighter had just exited the area. Authorities said a bedroom and bathroom were severely damaged.

Authorities said the building must be evaluated before firefighters can continue using it. the engine company has been relocated for the time being.

The driver of the car sustained minor injuries and authorities have not said if she will be charged.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Authorities said that Monday's incident is not the first time someone has hit the fire station. A protective barrier was installed last year, which slowed the car, but was unable to stop it.
