USSC Group in Uwchlan (PA) Says Manufacturers in the Region Can Thrive by Adapting to the Times

UWCHLAN >> A township maker of seats for public transportation and the military is taking the lead this week in trying to attract millennials in the region into the manufacturing field. USSC Group will open its doors to the public on Friday and hopes to convince some visitors that manufacturing has changed for the better - and is a viable career option.

It is part of “Manufacturing Day” — an annual national event observed at thousands of manufacturers hoping to show potential workers a sleek, technology-driven industry.

“Manufacturing technology is the most exciting sector in the next generation’s workforce,” said Frank Rzeznikiewicz, chief operating officer at USSC. “The demand for skilled labor, engineers, programmers, and operations management is in high demand and all forecasts indicate phenomenal growth. Salaries within these areas are also predicted to outpace all other career paths. Joining the new industrial revolution is a guarantee to a successful future.”

Rzeznikiewicz started at USSC in February and is in the process of transitioning the operation from a traditional factory to one where lean manufacturing is practiced.

“You can’t get kids to come into a dirty manufacturing plant,” said the manufacturing booster who has worked in the industry for 42 years. “This will be totally lean and clean” when the transition is complete next year.

Privately held, USSC Group is headquartered on Gordon Drive, has 112 employees working there and has 12 locations throughout the world. It has four lines: public transit seating, in which it designs and makes heavy duty passenger seats for city bus, motor coach and rail markets; operator seating, in which it provides seating for the extreme and heavy-duty transportation markets; military seating, in which it develops and manufactures high technology, high strength military seating and restraint systems; and FMNA, which makes environmentally friendly water mist fire suppression systems for engine compartments and enclosed spaces.

Dickson County (TN) Looking to Add New Ambulance and Fire Station

Dickson County is looking to add a seventh volunteer fire and ambulance station and to be run by the county in the southern area of the County off West Iron Hill Road. "I think we need one out here, I really do," Raymond Hudgins, a resident on West Iron Hill Road, said.
While some cities and towns run their own volunteer fire departments, the county also responds to many of the fires and EMS calls throughout the county.

At this time, the closest fire and ambulance station to the southern region of the County is in the city of Dickson, and due to the growth of the city and county, county officials think it's important to have a department that can serve the area south of I-40 more specifically.

"Because of the growth in the city of Dickson and traffic issues, it's really hard to get emergency services through Dickson down to that portion of the county," Dickson County mayor Bob Rial said.

The new fire and ambulance station will have a final vote for approval on Monday, and if approved, the city plans to spend around $450,000 in excess funds from a county savings account gathered through money saved in good government spending and an excess of revenue, meaning taxpayers will not have to front the bill.

Fairfield (OH) to Purchase New Fire Apparatus

Fairfield will take a quarter-century-old fire truck out of front line service by this time next year. To be paid with city income tax revenues, City Council authorized the purchase of a new 78-foot aerial fire engine that will cost the city $773,410.
The 24-year-old fire engine will be shifted into a reserve status and kept at Station 32 on Dixie Highway.

The city has been planning to replace the fire truck for about seven years, said Fairfield Fire Chief Don Bennett. So with or without the 2.5-mill fire/EMS levy voters will consider for the Nov. 8 ballot, the purchase was always anticipated to be made, he said.

"The parts to repair that engine are no longer available," Bennett said. "We've been very fortunate that we didn't have any major mechanical issues because there are no parts left for that whole generation of engine," which is a 6v92 engine.

And the chief said they know of only one mechanic in the region that has the knowledge to make repairs on that type of engine.

"That is an enormous amount of money," Bennett said of the purchase price.

For the first time in 15 years, voters are being asked to approve a fire levy that will help with the operation of the fire department. The levy is needed to help improve coverage for the city, by increasing the number of on-duty firefighters from 13 to 17.
