New Henderson County (NC) EMS Station Opens

A new Henderson County EMS station has opened in Fletcher. The station is scheduled to operate 12 hours per day, seven days per week, and was approved by the Board of Commissioners in the fiscal year 2016-17 budget to address the increasing number of emergency medical calls countywide.
The new ambulance and crew are based at the Fletcher Fire and Rescue Main Station, thanks to the cooperation of the Fletcher Fire and Rescue Department.

Locating the new ambulance in Fletcher will help address overall EMS call volume and decrease response times to emergency calls.

New Thermal Imaging Cameras Donated to Mandarin (FL)

The Mandarin Rotary made a generous donation to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department Wednesday morning.
Seven digital imaging cameras were presented to JFRD at Fire Station 51 on Old St. Augustine Road.

The cameras will be used by five area fire stations.

The cameras, each priced at $8,000, have proven to be useful in locating occupants of smoke-filled buildings and children lost in wooded areas. They are designed to seek heat to identify people.

Chief Kurt Wilson said JFRD had been using old analog cameras with parts that were not made anymore. When one of those cameras would break, it was unable to be fixed.

Wilson said the new donated cameras could save lives.

Syracuse Firefighters Looking to Protect Their Long-Term Health

Firefighters in Syracuse, along with Senator Charles Schumer, are pushing to create the first ever national firefighter cancer registry.

This new registry would help doctors track and treat firefighters with cancer. It's a difficult reality that's not new to the department in Syracuse.

Michael Valenti with the Firefighter Cancer Foundation says what comes along with it is more danger - even after flames have been put out.

"Our job is killing us. We know it's taken between 11 and 13 years off of our life," Valenti said.

For the men and women who make a career out of helping others, like Alex Cimino, it's a step lawmakers hope will make a difference in their lives once they hang up the helmet.
