Westbrook (CT) New Fire Apparatus Now in Service

Less than one year after the town ordered three identical Seagrave fire pumper trucks, the new trucks are on site and ready to respond in an emergency. The department held a "wet-down" ceremony to inaugurate the three new trucks entry into service on Sept. 17.
Unlike the department's older trucks that these replace, the new trucks all have fully-enclosed cabs and roll-over protection, and include air bags for increased occupant protection and safety. They also offer improved scene lighting for incident site illumination and each of the three now carry a vehicle extraction rescue tool. Before this, only the rescue truck carried one.

The department took possession of the new trucks in late July 2016 and spent the month of August working to install and add to the truck needed communications equipment, gear, and emergency equipment and supplies. The new trucks' radios are compatible with and will allow communications between the department and the town police and surrounding towns' departments.

The three new trucks replace the older 1982 Mack Pumper 462, the 1977 Mack Foam Truck 467 and the 1990 Mack Engine 466.

One benefit of having three identical trucks is that the Fire Department will need to perform fewer hours of firefighter-training from now on.

"Once you train on one truck, you're trained on all. You don't have to learn three different trucks. It eliminates lots of man-hours of training," said Fire Chief Mike Jenkins.

The purchases of the three trucks were originally authorized by a bond resolution passed in 2013; that plan envisioned buying three new pumpers over the course of five years. Instead, in November 2015, the Fire Department asked town's leaders to consider a new and better plan: to purchase three identical pumper trucks in one year for an upfront discount off the overall purchase price and future operational savings on firefighter training hours.

Lebanon (OH) Fire Chief Fired After Fire Apparatus Accident

The Lebanon Fire Chief Perry Gerome was fired Monday after a traffic accident involving a fire truck. "As a result of an investigation conducted by City Manager Pat Clements regarding a traffic accident involving one of the City's Fire Engines, it was determined that City policies and procedures were not followed," a statement said from the city.
Officials said the firing was "in light of previous disciplinary action."

Gerome was suspended after being accused of using city fire trucks to stage a mock fire scene as part of a birthday party at his home earlier this year, according to a city spokesperson.

He is also accused of using city-owned chainsaws to remove storm damage from his property.

Two people were taken to the hospital after a pickup and a fire truck collided on State Road 206 in St. Augustine Tuesday afternoon. None of the firefighters were hurt, but two passengers in the pickup had to be taken to Flagler Hospital, says St. Johns County Fire Rescue spokesperson Jeremy Robshaw.

E-ONE Delivers Three Fire Trucks to Suncor Energy

OCALA, FL—E-ONE, a member of REV Group, has delivered three trucks to Suncor Energy, Canada’s largest integrated energy company. The trucks will be used in Suncor’s oil sands mining site at Fort Hills, approximately 60 miles north of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. The new fire trucks include a Cyclone® II Industrial Bronto, a commercial tanker, and a Cyclone II industrial pumper.

The Cyclone II Bronto 116 RLP+, with 116-foot reach, is one of the most versatile aerial platforms on the market. The Bronto’s articulating jib boom allows extended access to reach up and over objects, with a maximum payload capacity of 1,275 pounds. This Cyclone Bronto features a 2,000-gpm pump, a 300-gallon foam tank, and a Williams® Hot Shot II 150 foam system.

The commercial tanker has a 2,850-gallon tank and serves a vital role since Suncor covers a large geographical area. The high-capacity tanker can resupply units at a scene and features a 1,000-gpm pump, a remote operated deck gun, and a Williams 1500 Around-The-Pump foam system.

In addition, the Cyclone II industrial pumper comes loaded with a four-wheel-drive chassis, 1,200-gallon “T” Combo Tank for water and foam, and crosslays installed into the bumper tray for less climbing at heights and fewer risks of injury. The Cyclone Pumper also includes a Williams 1500 Around-The-Pump foam system. Capable of pumping 3,000 gpm, the fire apparatus is well suited to an industrial facility where quickly pumping high volumes can be critical.

“Suncor runs a full-time fire department,” says Terry Planck, Industrial Sales Specialist for E-ONE. Suncor Energy Emergency Services also assists in the community, in fact, when wildfire swept through Alberta in May of 2016, an E-ONE Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) unit used by Suncor for mine response assisted in the town of Fort McMurray. “When conventional firefighting methods are not working,” Planck says, “The ARFF truck can be instrumental in flowing large volumes great distances to support the firefighting efforts.”
