Snowmass Wildcat (CO) Fire District will Ask Voters to Approve New Fire Station

The Snowmass Wildcat Fire Protection District will ask voters in November if property taxes should be increased to fund a new $17 million fire station to replace the Fritz Benedict-designed building that’s operated on this site since 1970.
During the board's monthly meeting on July 26, it voted unanimously to move ahead with a bonding question on the November ballot to increase taxes by 1.9 mills, according to chief Scott Thompson. That's about $88 per $500,000 in residential value, he said.

"We are in dire need of replacing the fire station," he said of a project that has been under discussion for more than seven years. "It seems like the longer we have waited, the more the prices have gone up."

Consideration was once given to moving the station to a site near town hall known as the Draw, but costs associated with the parcel's development made it less feasible than returning to the original property and doing an overhaul.

On this site, a $20 million plan envisioned initially has been whittled down by about $3 million after "spending a lot of time deciding what do we really need to service Snowmass Village. We don't have anything we don't need," Thompson said.

Snowmass Village residents are being asked for property tax increases in three different districts this year. In May, voters handily approved a $19.8 million wastewater treatment plant to replace the 48-year-old facility that must comply with heightened state water quality standards.

It's estimated that the annual impact for the water plant will be about $22 annually per $100,000 of a residence's actual value

The Aspen School District is also asking for a property tax increase in November to raise about $500,000 annually. The town is forming the Snowmass Village Education Grant Committee to help with the oversight and appropriation of those funds should the question pass. The district estimates its measure would cost $304 a year on a $4 million property.
