North County (AZ) Fire Sees Red with New Engine

The Type 3 engine was purchased because of the area it will be used in. "Sometimes there's some bad roads and this has got a high clearance," said Director Smitty Smith. The engine holds 5,000 gallons of water and will also be available for use in wildland fires.

A brand new four-wheel drive Type 3 fire engine with a high clearance was on display Thursday at the North County Fire & Medical District in Sun City West.

Fire personnel and members of the board circled the shiny red engine that will be housed out of Station 104 which is located in the northern part of the fire district where there are rougher roads and undeveloped land with the potential for brush fires.

The Type 3 engine was purchased because of the area it will be used in.

“Sometimes there’s some bad roads and this has got a high clearance,” said Director Smitty Smith.

The engine holds 5,000 gallons of water and will also be available for use in wildland fires.

“If the the state wants to rent apparatus from fire districts or departments for wildland fighting, a Type 3 engine is the one that is in biggest demand.” said Mr. Smith.

On Loan: Godfrey (IL) Borrows Brighton Pumper

GODFREY - Mechanical problems had crew at The Godfrey Fire Protection District scrambling this week, but luckily, another station has their back. Godfrey firefighters had to borrow a pumper from the Brighton Betsey Ann Fire Protection District after two of its three pumpers went down for maintenance.

Firefighters noticed that part of one of the pumper’s undercarriage had dropped off and was on the floor of the fire station, according to Chief Erik Kambarian

Two of the district’s pumpers were built in 1998, the third in 2009.

Kambarian said one of the pumpers was down for routine maintenance when firefighters discovered problems with a second truck.

“The guys came back from a call and saw it (part of the truck) on the station floor yesterday afternoon after returning from call on Mercury Drive,” he said.

They were able to determine that it was the pumper’s rear leaf spring.

“That’s where the water tank is, that’s where all the equipment is,” he noted.

He called Brighton Betsy Ann Fire Protection District Chief Jason Bowman.

Colleyville (TX) Fire Department Engine Welcomed with Push-in Ceremony

The Colleyville Fire Department introduced the newest member of its fleet - a $540,000 fire engine - on Saturday by going old school with a "push-in" ceremony and first "bath." About 100 firefighters and well-wishers turned out to symbolically back Engine 242 into its bay at Fire Station No.

And honoring another decades-old custom, civic leaders and firefighting fans of all ages used souvenir towels to wipe the engine dry after it was hosed down.

“It pays tribute to our history,” Fire Chief Brian J. Riley said. “It’s because the fire department is very traditional in a lot of the things they do.”

The housing ceremony is a tradition that stems from the days when fire departments used hand-drawn and horse-drawn equipment. Since horses could not easily push the equipment into the stations after fire calls, firefighters had to back the gear in.

The horses were washed down after returning from a call and backed into their stalls until the next alarm.

The latest fleet addition, which was approved by the City Council following a request by Riley, is a 2016 Pierce Fire Engine.

Drunken Driver Crashes into Taylor (MI) Fire Engine

TAYLOR, Mich. (WXYZ) - Three Taylor firefighters suffered minor injuries after a driver crashed into the fire rig as they were working on another accident scene. The accident happened Friday evening on westbound 1-94 at Pelham. Lt.

Lt. Chad Cousino told 7 Action News a drunk driver plowed into the back of the fire engine at a high rate of speed, injuring the fire fighters and causing extensive damage to the fire rig.

It’s unknown if the rig will be able to be repaired. The cost for a new fire engine can cost up to $500,000. However, officials say the cost will be covered by insurance and the deductible has been waived because the accident wasn't the fire department's fault.

Taylor police continue to investigate the accident.

Distracted drivers are putting first responders lives in danger by failing to obey Michigan’s Emergency Vehicle Caution law, known as the “move over law.”
