Cary (NC) Planning Two More Fire Stations

Town officials want to build at least two new fire stations in the coming years to improve response times and maintain one of the highest rated fire departments in the state. One fire station would be in the Walnut Street and U.S. 1 area. The other would be near 2531 O'Kelly Chapel Road in western Cary.
The Cary Fire Department, which was established in 1922, has nine fire stations - five of which opened in the last 20 years in response to increased development and population growth.

"My rule of thumb is about once every five years, because of growth, we've had to construct and staff a fire station," Cary Fire Chief Allan Cain said.

The Cary Fire Department strives to have the first truck arrive on the scene of an emergency about seven minutes after 911 is dialed at least 90 percent of the time, Cain said, including no more than five minutes of travel time 90 percent of the time.

The town has about $834,000 remaining in fire bond proceeds, but that isn't enough to cover the construction of either facility.

Ambulance Crashes in Campbell County (VA)

An Altavista life saving crew ambulance crashed on U.S. 29 in Campbell County Sunday afternoon, according to Virginia State Police. The crash took place at 1:49 p.m. in the 3100 block of Wards Road in the Altavista area due to a left front tire blowout, said Trooper T.L. Barr.
There were five occupants in the vehicle at the time of the crash: two medics, an 84-year old patient and two juveniles participating in a ride-along program, Barr said.

All occupants were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital with minor injuries and have been released, except the 84-year-old, who Barr said has fractures and will possibly be admitted.

East Valley Volunteer Fire Department Shows off Fire Equipment to Community

As her grandson sat atop a search vehicle, Pam Fleisner said Saturday's Public Safety Open House served as a great venue to teach the 5-year-old boy about the importance of first responders. "It's a wonderful educational tool to teach little ones these people are here to help us," Fleisner said.
Saturday's open house was sparked by Bridget DeFord, a dispatcher and trainer. DeFord said the idea originated intentionally to recruit for public safety telecommunications, but it soon transformed into including all of the agencies dispatchers work with.

The public generally doesn't interact with dispatchers or first responders unless they are in an emergency. The event was a good way to have invite a dialogue, she said.
