Fire Truck Involved in Rankin Wreck; Child Dies

Authorities say there is an accident with injuries involving a fire truck on Highway 43 in Rankin County.

A child is dead after an accident Sunday  involving a fire truck on  Mississippi 43 in Rankin County.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Cpl. Eric Henry said a Lake Harbor Volunteer Fire Department tanker truck collided with a Ford Escape sometime before 2:45 p.m. Two firefighters were in the tanker truck, and a mother, father and their three children were in the vehicle.

Higuillermo Perez, 10, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other two children and both parents were transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

The father, Hernan Perez, 27, is in stable condition. The mother, Mireya Montreo, 33, is in critical condition. Herman Perez Montreo, 4, and Jacqueline Perez Montero, 4 months, were both airlifted to UMMC and are in critical condition.

Henry said the two firefighters were in pain,  and the driver was also transported to UMMC. Their names have not been released.

At this point it is unclear how the accident happened, Henry said. Reconstructionists are working the scene with a report expected within five days.
