Calhoun County (SC) Gets Fire Apparatus Grant

Calhoun County has been awarded a Community Development Block Grant of $267,500 for the purchase of a new pumper truck. The local match is $26,750.

The money is to be used for the Jumper Station Fire Department near Swansea.

On Monday, Calhoun County Council approved a Planning Management Agreement so the Lower Savannah Council of Governments can administer the grant process.

The county is developing a $1 million borrowing package for an additional three trucks for the Rural Fire District. The trucks will be up for bid in the spring.

That will bring the county to a total of seven trucks.

"Eventually, we’re going to have nine trucks," council Chairman David Summers said.

Car Accident When Wheel Falls Off Tulsa (OK) Ambulance

Tulsa Police say a woman crashed her car after hitting a tire which had come off an EMSA ambulance early Tuesday.

Officers said the southbound ambulance lost a pair of rear tires on Highway 75 just north of the Peoria exit and a car driving behind hit one of them. The impact caused the car to cross into the northbound lanes and hit a light pole, police said.

The driver of the ambulance was able to stop the vehicle without hitting anything.

Neither the driver of the car nor the EMSA paramedics were injured.  Police say the ambulance wasn't transporting a patient at the time of the incident.

Butte (MT) Firefighters Want to Keep Fire Apparatus Order Despite Specification Issue

Firefighters want to keep their order for a new $288,692 pumper truck the same even though it might not meet one specification because of Butte's high elevation.

"They think it will be just as safe," said Butte-Silver Bow Fire Chief Jeff Miller.

The county received a lone bid for a 2016 GPM Pumper/Tender truck for the Big Butte Volunteer Fire Department, but it came with a letter from the company saying it had overlooked one detail.

Because Butte sits at 5,539 feet elevation - more than a mile high - the fire truck can't pump as much water per minute as it was advertised and certified to when the bid was submitted recently.

Big Sky Fire Equipment of Lewistown caught the missed detail and sent a letter noting the fact to Fire Chief Jeff Miller. He opened the bid and letter before commissioners a few weeks ago.

There were a few options on what to do that included paying $5,000 more for a larger pump to meet the as-advertised spec. But that would limit other equipment functions.

Miller said he talked with others, including those with the Big Butte department, and they wanted to simply "decertify" the truck down to 1,250 gallons of water per minute standard so it met that standard.

In a letter and request before commissioners Wednesday night, Miller said there was no interest in rebidding the truck. He also said he had spoken with Big Sky Fire Equipment representative Joe Moline.
