A helicopter crashed on top of a building in Midtown on Monday afternoon. It happened at around 1:43 p.m., according to FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro. The helicopter was flying in restricted air space and in rain and fog when it crashed. More than 100 emergency responders rushed to the scene at 787 Seventh Ave.

The message from Montgomery County’s fire union to Governor Larry Hogan was direct and alarming. The county’s emergency radio system is on the brink of “catastrophic failure,” and officials must find a way to replace the system “as quickly as humanely possible.” A three-page letter sent June 5 by International Association of Firefighters Lodge 1664 President Jeffrey Bundle to Hogan details concerns that the radio system is long overdue for an upgrade.

The names etched on the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Colorado Springs underscore the grim truth about the leading cause of death among firefighters. Over the past five years, 65 percent of the 944 firefighters whose names were added to the wall succumbed to job-related cancers. This year will be no different, according to Patrick Morrison of the International Association of Fire Fighters.
