Contain the Risks to Full Exposure

Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Nuclear (CBRN) threats can result in mass casualties or disrupt entire ecosystems. CBRN defense initiatives have been part of the discussions for government and healthcare organizations since the early 1950s, examining the need for protective measures for the hazards these threats may present.

In recent years, CBRN defense has gained even more traction, with nuclear and biological threats being at the center of political tensions while the reality of increased access to chemicals and materials required for manufacturing weapons continues to be a problem.

With the risks of exposure and the potential to shut down entire operations, CBRN defense aims at mitigating the dangers they pose to our first-responders and healthcare workers’ safety and wellbeing.

The COVID-19 pandemic creating shortages of vital personal protective equipment along with the use of adulterated equipment has reinforced the need for reliable and innovative ways to protect our heroes, providing them with solutions that have been tested, validated, and utilized even in the most complex situations.

Founded in 1999, ISOVAC designs, develops, commercializes, and manufactures products for CBRN isolation, containment, and protection solutions. ISOVAC’s cutting-edge products are designed to mitigate the risks and adverse effects of exposure. As a provider of recognized isolation solutions, ISOVAC has worked with government organizations around the world.

ISOVAC’s flagship product, the CAPSULS™ (Containment And Protection System Utilizing Life Support) is a portable Patient Isolation Unit (PIU) enabling medical intervention through carefully designed features that maintain end-user’s safety while preventing chemical, biological and radiological cross-contamination. Created as a response to the increasing threat of chemical weapons during the Gulf War, the CAPSULS offers protection for first-responders against a broad range of Toxic Industrial Chemical (TIC), Chemical Warfare Agents (CWA), and biological hazards in various forms. The device’s unrivaled portability with improved pack and reduced system weight is designed to be rapidly deployed, allowing patients to be isolated within minutes and allows for safe transportation of patients through aircraft, ambulances, ships, or any other vehicle capable of safely relocating a patient on a standard litter.

The ORCA™ (Operation Rescue Containment Apparatus), specifically designed for use in marine environments, has rapidly gained popularity and approval since its creation, positioning ISOVAC as the sole-source provider of PIU for the U.S. Coast Guard. The unit is built from selectively permeable fabric and exhaust filtering to prevent chemical and biological cross-contamination between an enclosed patient and the external environment during evacuation and transport activities and ensure pathogens containment. Created for the most rigorous conditions, the ORCA is intended to respond to the demand of hoisting operations that requires the litter and has been tested and shown to meet and exceed U.S. Military Target Performance Value (TPV).

With its CAPSULS and ORCA being the only FDA Cleared Class II Medical Devices under 510(k), ISOVAC is the only manufacturer of certified PIUs in the United States.

Finally, with the CBAG™, a Contaminated Human Remain Pouch (CHRP), ISOVAC provides a portable solution with unsurpassed protection for stand-alone transportation of CBR contaminated remains, equipment and field gears, allowing for temporary storage while awaiting decontamination or burial. The CBAG can also offer protection to uncontaminated equipment and supplies during transport in biohazard-contaminated areas.

HME Ahrens-Fox Facilitates Transformation of Monroe County (GA) Emergency Services Operating Model with Order of 12 Custom Fire Apparatus

Wyoming, MICH – HME Ahrens-Fox (HMEAF or the Company) acknowledged the leadership of both the Monroe County Fire Apparatus Committee and the Emergency Services Department in conceptualizing, and subsequently delivering, a new deployment model that equalizes incident service levels across the disparate needs of the county, reduces operating expenses within their combination department, and improves firefighter safety.

Monroe County, which is also home of the Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth, GA, spans 398 square miles and has a population of over 26,000 citizens. The legacy equipment previously in place across the county is varied and did not allow for:

• Standardized firefighter training

• Standardized apparatus testing and maintenance

• A single point of contact for field service needs, parts sourcing, or warranty claims

“As we implement the new deployment model and standardize our apparatus, Monroe County will be able to send any firefighter (full time or volunteer) to any of our firehouses and know they will be more efficient, provide the same level of incidence response and be safer. We will achieve this more balanced service model at a lower total cost to the citizens of the county,” said Matt Jackson, Fire Chief, Monroe County Emergency Services.

Central County Fire & Rescue Dedicates New Fire Truck in Honor of American Veterans

An impromptu ceremony on the manufacturing floor was held on Tuesday, the 80th anniversary of the 1941 Pearl Harbor attacks.

Saint Peters, MO. Dec 7, 2021With construction underway for three new fire trucks purchased over a year ago, a last minute idea to paint one of the fire trucks with an American flag design resulted in a unique fire truck that is something never before created. The “American Veteran Fire Truck” by Pierce was rolled onto the “blue floor” floor at Pierce Manufacturing this week for final inspection by the professional firefighters of Central County Fire & Rescue (CCFR).

Located in the St. Louis metro region, CCFR provides fire protection services in Saint Peters, Missouri. Saint Peters is also the former home of Marine Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz, who was killed in action on August 26, 2021 as the result of an enemy attack while supporting non-combatant evacuation operations in Kabul, Afghanistan during Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. It was during the services to honor Lance Corporal Schmitz’ life and his ultimate sacrifice that the idea to dedicate a truck in his honor was first born.

“Our entire community was in shock and mourning the death of a local hero, and we knew we wanted to do something to honor him,” says Jason Meinershagen, CCFR Deputy Chief and Public Information Officer. “Our fire district is very supportive of our veterans, so we quickly knew it was not enough to dedicate a fire truck to just one man. We wanted to do something that touched the heart of every patriot in our community,” says Meinershagen.

Initially referred to as “the flag truck,” the original idea of painting the truck with an American flag theme grew to incorporate multiple elements of military service and sacrifice, including the MIA/POW theme and the emblems for every military branch. In the saddest of ways, the timing was ironic. When CCFR representatives first pitched the idea to Pierce, they discovered that two of the three trucks they purchased were already in the process of being painted, and the third truck was scheduled to move into the paint room the next day. A decision had to be made right then. To move forward with the idea would mean pulling the truck off the production line and risking delays while a new paint design was approved.

As news of the decision to pull the truck off the line to design a new paint scheme made the rounds amongst Pierce employees, it caught the attention of Jim Johnson, President of Pierce Manufacturing.

“This CCFR pumper tells a story, and a photo of this type of vehicle that will be hung on my wall at home when I retire. It’s so humbling to be a part of dedicating this truck to the American veteran,” says Johnson.

Firefighters from CCFR traveled to Appleton, Wisconsin this week to perform the final inspection of the fire truck at Pierce Manufacturing. Again, the timing proved to be ironic, if not historic. While at the plant on Tuesday, also the 80th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941, an impromptu ceremony was held to remember Pearl Harbor Day. CCFR firefighters also personally thanked every employee who played a role in the design, construction, and painting of the American Veteran Firetruck and presented a unique challenge coin commemorating the fire truck along with a personalized letter of appreciation to nearly 280 Pierce employees.

In part, the letter read, “Our mission here at CCFR is ‘Working Together, Supporting Our Community,’ and we know of no greater or more honorable way to support our community than to support the veterans who live among us. Whether they served in wartime or in peacetime, on American soil or in distant lands, every American veteran deserves the respect and appreciation of a grateful nation, regardless of political or religious a
