Austintown (OH) Fire Station 1 Getting Upgrade

Austintown (OH) Fire Station 1 will be getting an upgrade thanks to a $50,000 check the department received from the Mahoning County Commissioner, reports wytv.com.

The money will go to fix the station’s driveway, which has cracked. Most apparatus weigh about 50,000 pounds, and, when parked for several hours at a time during trainings, do damage.

The station was built in 1978.

Bentonville (AR) Fire Department Getting New Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Truck

The Bentonville (AR) Fire Department is getting a new aircraft rescue firefighting truck thanks to the help of a local donation, reports nwahomepage.com.

A celebration was held Monday at the department’s Station 6, located across from the Bentonville Airport.

The apparatus is equipped with chemicals needed to put out jet-fuel fires, doesn’t require boots on the ground to put out fires, and its driver can maneuver a fire from the truck at a farther distance.

Steuart Walton, Co-Founder of Runway Group, donated $800,000 to help bring the high-tech equipment to the city, while the remaining $65,000 will be paid by the city, which approved funding last week.

The department will take hold of the new truck in 2022.

North Babylon (NY) Fire Truck Hit at Crash Scene, Firefighter Hurt

A North Babylon (NY) Volunteer Fire Department firefighter was hospitalized and a department engine was damaged after a car struck the back of the apparatus blocking a crash scene on Sunday morning, according to a Facebook post by the department.

According to the Facebook post, Engine 1-8-2 was struck from behind while it was parked on Southern State Parkway in the early morning hours of July 25. The engine was blocking the second of a four-car crash that happened near an earlier single-car crash that happened just east of Exit 38.

All North Babylon units were summoned to the scene to close down the parkway and divert traffic. A mutual-aid ambulance was summoned from West Babylon Fire Department to transport the chauffeur of the engine to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries for evaluation, according to the Facebook post.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the back of the engine was taken in to custody by the New York State Police and refused any medical treatment.

The apparatus crash was the fourth motor vehicle crash North Babylon firefighters responded to on Sunday morning.

Logan City (UT) Gets Three New Fire Trucks, Destroys Three to Meet Grant Requirements

Logan City (UT) Fire Department added triplets to its fleet on Monday, welcoming three new custom engines, according to a report published by the Herald Journal News.

The three engines they replace must be destroyed, however, due to the terms of a 50 percent grant the city received to cover the cost of the rigs that cost around $600,000 each, the newspaper reported.

A stipulation in the Utah Department of Environmental Quality grant focused on reducing emissions and air quality in the area, according to the newspaper. To make sure the older apparatus no longer produce pollution, they are being hauled to a local salvage yard where the frames will be cut in half and the engines destroyed by core drilling, the newspaper reported. The department has to provide video footage of the trucks being destroyed to receive the grant payment.

The apparatus, which are about 20 years old, don’t meet the current emissions standards and allowing them to remain on the road defeats the purpose of the grant, the newspaper reported. Logan firefighters are lamenting the fact that the engines are still useable and could be put in service by other fire departments but understand the terms of the agreement, according to the Hearld report.

While the frames and the engines must be destroyed, there are other parts that can be salvages to help other agencies, the newspaper reported.

The three new apparatus are exactly the same and will help standardize the fleet, the newspaper reported.
