After Decades of Work, Shasta County (CA) to Get New Fire Station

According to a report from KRCR, South Shasta County, California, will be getting a county fire station located off Riverside Avenue and Ox-Yoke Road. The more than two-acre plot of land was donated to the county by Sierra Pacific Industries.

The new Station 47 will be about 10,000 square feet in size and house two firefighters and two fire engines, with more room to grow.

Approximately 30,000 people are currently served out of the airport fire station. CAL FIRE Chief Sean Kavanaugh says the new station will lead to faster response times, offering quick access with the Interstate 5 and 273 corridor to the north and south as well as down to West Anderson and to the eastern portion of the countyto Deschutes and the Balls Ferry Road area.

Kavanaugh says he hopes the station will be ready to begin responses by next summer.

Leland (NC) to Add New Fire Station, Relocate Another

According to a report from WECT, the new Leland (NC) Fire Rescue (LFR) Station 53 will be coming to town with hopes of improving the LFD’s ability to fight fires and save taxpayer money.

Station 53 will be located along Old Lanvale Road. Construction is expected to be completed later this summer. In addition to saving taxpayer funds, LFR Chief Chris Langlois said the new station will speed up response times and create a more efficient firefighter response.

Langlois believes the addition of this third station for LFR will cut travel time for crews to scenes nearly in half, or down to about four minutes per incident. For 911 callers, this difference could mean life or death.

Station 53 will be staffed by nine new full-time employees. LFR plans to use its volunteers as a supplement for staff when necessary.

Langlois also said the new station may increase LFR’s fire insurance rating, which could lower insurance premiums for town taxpayers.

Along with the new station, Station 51 on Village Road will be relocated to Highway 74. LFR is working on creating revised response districts to better serve its residents.

Mt. Juliet (TN) Gets Closer to Building New Fire Station

According to a report from The Wilson Post, the seven-year wait for a new Mt. Juiet (TN) Fire Department (MJFD) station may be coming to a close after designs were completed last week and city officials now plan to review qualifying bids the final week of April.

MTFD Chief Jamie Luffman stated that a request for bids goes out March 24, with the town targeting the first week of May to begin construction.

Mt. Juliet purchased land from Wilson County Schools near Green Hill High School for $200,000. Construction costs for the station will be $3 million.

The new station will be 10,000 square feet in size with three bays. It will house an engine, a ladder truck, one ambulance, and (most likely) REHAB 23. Luffman will request nine new firefighters to man the station at a cost of $460,000 annually.

The city’s south-side fire station was operated on property tax funds the past seven years. It is currently funded out of the city’s general budget, similar to other city budgets; the same applies for the north station.

Plans Move Forward for New Holyoke (CO) Fire Station

According to a report from The Holyoke Enterprise, plans for a new Holyoke (CO) Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) station at the southwest corner of the intersection of West Denver Street and South Belford Avenue moved forward at the recent Holyoke City Council meeting on March 16.

The council voted unanimously to open the project up for bids and go with a general contractor rather than piece it together with several bids for different aspects of the project.

Among many station Council members discussed things like the height of the fire station’s bay doors. Mayor Orville Tonsing said that the council needed to choose between 14- or 16-foot doors and whether to make all six doors the same height. The original plan called for 14-foot doors.

Bittner expressed concern about the possibility of having all six doors the same height because of the height of the building in the corners, and he said he thought it would be better to have two 16-foot doors in the center and two 14-foot doors on either side. Tonsing said he thought they should all be 16 feet tall, and the two contractors he spoke to said it was possible to do so.

HVFD Chief Stacy Rueter said that, by keeping the bay doors the same height, the department wouldn’t need to park certain trucks in certain bays. So, the council decided to have all doors the same height at 16 feet.

Council members chose to have forced ventilation, heating, and air-conditioning in the office area of the building because the space could eventually be used for public functions.
