Atchison City Commission unanimously approved a grant that will provide the fire department with a new mini-pumper truck, reports AtchisonGlobeNow.com.

The department estimates that more than 80% of calls are as first responders to medical emergencies. Currently the department must use one of its full-sized pumper trucks to respond to all calls. One of the pumper trucks is due for replacement in the next couple years.

Rather than replacing that truck, the fire chief recommended a new mini-pumper truck. The estimated cost of a mini-pumper is $275,000 and the city will be responsible for $13,750 of that cost.

The acquisition of a smaller truck will also reduce maintenance costs.

A wall is being put into a Norwalk fire station, reports Norwalk Reflector.

A fire official said that a camera was recording individuals cutting through a back parking lot that is off-limits to the public.

A construction company began boring holes for supports that will eventually secure the concrete wall into place. There will be gated openings with chain link gates.

The work is being done due to in-kind donations. The fire station was completed in 2018.

According to a report from The Herald Democrat, the Pottsboro (TX) Fire Department (PFD) has acquired a new 2021 Freightliner pumper/tender with help from a $200,000 cost-share grant through the Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program.

A tender has the ability to transport 1,500 gallons of water and has a 10-inch dump valve that can rapidly fill a drop tank designed to hold 2,500 gallons of water, assisting with rural firefighting in remote areas.

The new pumper/tender replaces a 1996 apparatus that had a 1,000-gallon water tank. According to PFD Chief Donnie Glenn, the new truck’s increased water capacity gives the department more time on the fireground and “extra water on the fire.” He also said that the new truck can fill brush trucks when fighting wildland fires and is equipped with extra scene lighting for night firefighting.

The PFD’s response area is largely rural and without fire hydrants. The department also serves the Lake Texoma area during times of automatic aid with Preston and Locust Fire Departments.

PFD has been serving its community since 1946 and has a 42-square-mile response area.

In early September 2020, it occupied a new 34,000-square-foot facility, with 22,000 square feet dedicated solely to service.

Vice-President of Apparatus Sales Brian Franz said, “Our old shop could only service six apparatus at one time; the new facility can handle 15 rigs at one time. Fortunately, we haven’t had to lay off employees in the past year because of COVID-19 and actually hired six new people. We’re always looking for qualified technicians for both in the shop and road service. There is no doubt our expanded shop and service capabilities have greatly influenced new apparatus sales. We’ve had our best year ever with Rosenbauer with over 50 rigs currently on order with them.” 

Franz said Sentinel recently received two orders from Missouri fire districts for four rigs each. All eight will feature Rosenbauer’s EXT extruded aluminum bodies. Lincoln County Fire Protection District ordered two rescue-pumpers with 1,000-gallon tanks and two pumper-tankers with 2,500-gallon tanks. They’ll feature Rosenbauer’s Commander custom chassis and Hale/Idex SAM control systems.

The Southern Boone Fire Protection District’s four rigs will be on Peterbilt 567 commercial chassis. Two 750 gallon-per-minute x 1,700-gallon tankers and a walk-around heavy rescue with a cascade system and Wil Burt light tower will be on a two-door chassis. A rear-mount pumper with a 1,000-gallon tank, a Waterous CAFS system, and a Will-Burt light tower will be on a four-door chassis.
