Blaze at Temple (TX) Fire and Rescue’s Station 5

Temple (TX) Fire and Rescue responded to a fire at its own Station 5 early Saturday night, reports fox44news.com.

The station crew was dispatched when the fire was reported. Five units from neighboring stations responded at 7:09 p.m.; they were able to extinguish it by 7:34 p.m.

The fire is still under investigation, but it’s believed to have been caused by a stove that was left on.

The building, located at 510 N Apache Dr., sustained damage to the kitchen and smoke damage to the entire facility. The amount of damage has not yet been determined, though officials say no one was hurt.

Station 5 crews will be temporarily relocated to Station 8.

Protea Glen (South Africa) Fire Station Opens, Receives 10 Apparatus

On June 18, the City of Johannesburg (South Africa) opened the Protea Glen Fire Station, which serves the community of Protea Glen as well as Naledi, Mapetla, Protea North, Lufereng, and Lenasia.

The facility is a multi-purpose station and is also the home of the 10th BESAFE CENTRE—the Emergency Management Services Public Information, Education, and Relations team responsible for educating all residents about life and fire safety—in Johannesburg.

In addition, city officials announce that Johannesburg has received 10 fire and rescue vehicles previously paid for by the prior administration.

“The City had paid an amount of R172 million [just over $12 million] for fire engines which were never delivered and for which the current administration vowed to recover value for the residents of Johannesburg whose monies were irregularly and unlawfully dispensed without benefit. Today (June 18), in line with a Judgment of the High Court, we have successfully recovered five new fire engines and an additional five rapid response rescue vehicles to serve the communities of Johannesburg,” says Mayor Makhubo in a press release.

The opening of the station and arrival of the vehicles coincide with Johannesburg’s approval of R326-million [almost $23 million] to acquire apparatus for all its 31 stations.

10 Hurt After FDNY Truck Collides with Minivan in Brooklyn (NY)

Ten people were hurt after an FDNY truck smashed into the side of a minivan in Brooklyn (NY) on Friday afternoon, reports nbcnewyork.com.

Of the 10 people injured, eight were in the minivan and two were firefighters. Six of the eight hurt are adults; none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

The accident happened at the intersection of Driggs Avenue and South 5th Street in Williamsburg around 3 p.m., officials say. The apparatus was responding to multiple calls of a fire when it collided with the minivan.

The cause is under investigation, and officials haven’t said how fast the truck was going, if its lights and sirens were on at the time, or why the van was unable to get out of the way.
