Safety Components PF Zero™ Durable Water Repellent Finish Brings New Performance to PPE Fabrics

Safety Components, a leader in developing fabric technologies that move the industry forward, is excited to introduce PF Zero™ finish, the first non-fluorinated durable water repellent finish developed specifically for PPE fabrics. With patented, high performance flame resistant outer shell fabrics like PBI Max™ and Armor AP™, thermal liners like Glide Ice™ and Prism™, and wildland/tech rescue fabrics like Sigma — more large metro cities specify and wear materials made by Safety Components than any other.

Guy Lucas, Business Development Director for Safety Components, stated, “We’d like to share with our first responder partners and customers a running change that is occurring with all of Safety Components’ flame-resistant materials, those requiring water resistance, sold under the NFPA 1971 and NFPA 1951 certifications. Our newest finish, called PF Zero, uses advanced technology that allows Safety Components the ability to employ a new water repellent chemistry that is sustainable and fluorine-free. This is a true game changer for the industry.”

PF Zero fabrics have been certified by UL as an approved replacement finish for fabrics sold by Safety Components under NFPA 1971/1951. Important performance characteristics such as flame resistance, TPP, and THL remain the same for Safety Components fabrics regardless of the finish. While Safety Components has already started producing materials finished with PF Zero, it could take several months for garments made with Safety Components PF Zero treated fabrics to filter through the supply chain and into the hands of first responders.

Safety Components operates as part of Elevate Textiles. Elevate and its premium brands are committed to improving sustainability for a lower carbon footprint as a cornerstone of every new product initiative. Safety Components’ newest PF Zero finish is a testament to that direction, requiring 15% less energy to produce while enhancing sustainability to PPE.

Mr. Lucas went on to say, “For more than 100 years, Safety Component fabrics have represented high performance and innovation, and our commitment to first responders and the environment will always be at the forefront of our existence. PF Zero finish supports our longstanding core values with a renewed focus on a cleaner environment. As a global leader  in technology-driven fabric solutions for first responders and military professionals, Safety Components won’t settle for anything less.”

Shreveport (LA) Fire Department Purchases Used Trucks from Bossier City

According to a report from KTBS, after Shreveport, Louisiana, voters rejected two bond proposals since 2019, the city found itself bargain on two used fire trucks to help the Shreveport Fire Department (SFD). Both trucks come to Shreveport from Bossier City, and one is now a bay at the SFD’s maintenance facility.

SFD Chief Scott Wolverton says that both trucks, 2007 and 2008 models, respectively, have about 45,000 miles on them.

The purchase of the trucks began with a chance meeting between Shreveport City Councilman Grayson Boucher and Bossier City Fire Department (BCFD) Chief Brad Zagone at a restaurant. Boucher says Zagone told him the BCFD was retiring two trucks, so Boucher got Wolverton involved with the administrations of both cities to make a deal.

Boucher announced the plan at a meeting of Caddo Republicans recently, saying that Shreveport purchased two retired BCFD fire trucks at $45,000 apiece, saving the citizens more than $400,000 apiece.

Wolverton said that the purchase price for the first truck was the same as its appraised value, and that a new truck would have cost the city about $550,000.

The trucks, from Ferrara, were built to the same specifications that Shreveport had bought from them before. They will replace 1987 and 1988 models.

Tusculum (TN) Volunteer Fire Department Seeks Expansion With New, Larger Station

According to a report from WVLT, Tusculum, a small town in Greene County, Tennessee, is facing an issue with the size of its fire station, and its cramped space has Tusculum (TN) Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) crews hoping for a new building.

The COVID-19 pandemic requires people to be six feet apart, but imagine trying to fit a large fire truck that barely fits inside the building. apart. The moment you step inside the TVFD’s station, you’ll quickly see how social distancing is tough.

TVFD Chief Marty Shelton is working with the town council on a three-phase expansion project that includes a new station. However, the project was postponed because of the pandemic, but it now shows signs of opportunity again.

The TVFD is spread between two buildings. Inside one, the fire truck barely fits. If you look close you’ll see it touches the wall when backed in and barely an inch in the front between the garage doors.

A new building will cost approximately $150,000, before furnishings and new modern fire equipment. It sounds expensive, but in the long run, Shelton hopes the investment will save property owners money and save lives.

The long-range plan has Tusculum Police Department expanding into the current fire department space, leaving more room in town hall for additional renovations there.

The added space would also allow the TVFD to create new living space such as bathrooms, a small kitchen, a meeting area, and so on. Other areas of growth could also mean new sleep areas for crews to staff the station during inclement weather or other available times.
