Roanoke (VA) Fire-EMS Awarded More Than $161K

The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) awarded Roanoke Fire-EMS more than $161,000 for the VDEM Regional 6 Special Operations teams, according to a report in WSLS.com.

One grant is for the Swift Water and Heavy Technical Rescue Programs, while the second is for the Hazardous Materials Team. Both grants aim to help first responders better respond to swift water rescue and hazardous waste calls.

Since the department is part of regional swift water rescue and hazardous materials teams with other localities, the city will disperse the funds to other local departments, such as Salem, Roanoke County, and Franklin County.

Mount Airy (MD) Volunteer Fire Co. Christens Truck 1

The Mount Airy (MD) Volunteer Fire Company recently placed into service a new 2020 E-One 100-foot ladder truck to be known as Truck 1, according to a report in BaltimoreSun.com.

The $1.1 million Truck 1 aims to provide all traditional truck services along with aerial rescue and aerial master stream capabilities to southern Carroll County, southeastern Frederick County, northern Montgomery County, and western Howard County, the report said. Truck 1 also aims to be available anywhere it may be requested by fire companies needing the services it can provide.

Truck 1 is the first unit of this type for the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company in its 95-year history. It holds seating for six crew members with five self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), according to the report. The unit is powered by a Cummins X 15 engine with 565 horsepower rating and an Allison EVS 4500 automatic transmission. The truck is equipped with a 10kw Onan generator and 246 feet of ground ladders in various lengths.
