New Fire Apparatus First of its Kind in Central Arkansas

The new fire truck is the first of its kind in central Arkansas.

It allows the department to run and carry multiple tools at one time, designed to get out if you're trapped in a wrecked car.

Conway Fire says it was a crucial investment, especially due to the number of accidents they respond to.

Rhode Island Airport Fire Apparatus Taken Out of Service

The issue was discovered last week during an annual certification by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

According to Richard McCurley, the acting senior vice president of operations at T.F. Green Airport, an internal inspection revealed one of the R. I. Airport Corporation's three fire trucks was not able to pump the correct mixture of foam and water. Foam is used as a fire suppressant.

Vintage Brownsville (TX) Fire Apparatus Returns

The 20th century had just begun, Brownsville’s fire department was based in Market Square with a pumper wagon that was hauled by a fire horse, but the city was realizing that this was not enough.

“Brownsville was in a boom. We had just built a hotel prior to that in 1921 that was a 10 story hotel in 1921 we built the State National Bank which was five stories on Elizabeth Street we didn’t have the machinery in order to get to those levels,” said Eugene Fernandez, Commissioner of the Cameron County Historical Commission.

Almost ten years after buying a pumper truck in 1918 the city decided to further commit to protect its citizens by buying an even larger fire unit that was a full fifty-five feet in length.

PHMSA Announces Public Meeting to Solicit Input for 2020 Emergency Response Guidebook

On May 7, 2019, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration announced a public meeting scheduled for June 17, 2019, to solicit input on the development of the 2020 edition of the Emergency Response Guidebook.

The ERG is a guidebook intended for use by first responders during the initial phase of a transportation incident involving dangerous goods/hazardous materials and has been updated and published every four years.

During the June 17 meeting, PHMSA will discuss methodology used to determine the appropriate response protective distances for poisonous vapors resulting from spills involving dangerous goods considered toxic by inhalation in the “green pages” of the 2016 ERG. PHMSA will also solicit comments related to new methodologies and considerations for future editions of the ERG and discuss outcomes of field experiments as well as ongoing research to better understand environmental effects on airborne toxic gas concentrations and updates that will be published in the 2020 ERG.

Since 1980, it has been PHMSA’s goal that all public emergency response personnel have free and immediate access to the ERG. To date, nearly 14.5 million free copies have been distributed to the emergency response community through state emergency management coordinators. PHMSA has also developed free online resources and mobile applications to make the ERG more accessible.

For more information on the meeting, including how to participate, please visit the full notice of public meeting in the federal register. For additional information on the ERG, please visit https://www.phmsa.dot.gov/hazmat/erg/emergency-response-guidebook-erg
