Santa Maria (CA) Firefighters Train on New Tractor-Drawn Aerial Ladder Quint

New Apparatus Made Possible by Grant

KEYT recently profiled a new addition to the Santa Maria (CA) Fire Department's fleet.

The acquisition of the new $1.5 million tractor-drawn aerial ladder quint was made possible by an Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

"This is like driving a tractor trailer. That’s what we’ve been preaching to the guys on the floor. Not only are you worried about the front part, but you’re also worried about the back trailer part, so it’s definitely longer, there’s more moving parts. It’s a different expertise,” said Firefighter AJ Tevis.

The new rig is expected to help with maneuverability on city streets, which are undergoing significant development.

FDSOA Announces Keynote for January 2019

Janine Driver

The Fire Department Safety Officer Association (FDSOA) announced Janine Driver, bestselling author of You Can’t Lie to Me and former lie detection expert for the FBI, CIA, and Scotland Yard, will be the keynote speaker for the 2019 Apparatus Maintenance & Specification Symposium and the 2019 Safety Forum. This event will be held January 20-24 in Orlando, Florida.

Driver certainly can relate to the fire service as the daughter of Charlie Driver, recently retired EVT for Brookline, Massachusetts. Last year, she also presented to the Fire Emergency Manufacturers and Services Association and Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association’s annual meetings and got rave reviews.

“If you’re a fleet supervisor or EVT and dealing with apparatus manufacturers or vendors on bids or a safety officer trying to convince your fire chief to invest in better safety gear or with firefighters to wear their turn out gear or SCBAs, listen, you say more than you think,” said Driver. “Imagine if you knew in your life what you were saying without saying a word!”

ALSO: Why Attend the FDSOA Apparatus Specification and Maintenance Symposium?

Janine Driver has demonstrated her world-renowned expertise on programs including the NBC Today Show, Dr. Oz, Nancy Grace and CNN. Her presentation is fast-paced, interactive and will make you rethink interactions within the fire department, colleagues and in your community. A former hostage negotiator, Driver will also teach you how position yourself for success in negotiations with manufacturers and vendors—even family and friends--and get people to cooperate.

“Regardless of your occupation, the ability to ‘read’ people is extremely important,” said Rich Marinucci, executive director, FDSOA. “Fire officers, fire apparatus manufactures, suppliers and virtually everyone else, can benefit from this session. Driver’s message is helpful for safety officers who must not only monitor firefighter activities, but also anticipate what may occur in the near future.”

The FDSOA Apparatus Specification and Maintenance Symposium will be held Monday, January 20 to Wednesday, January 23rd. Concurrently the FDSOA Safety Forum will be hold the two-day Incident Safety Officer Academy and the Health & Safety Officer Academy on January 21-22.
