It is 59 feet long and weighs more than 68,000 pounds. The truck is equipped with driver seats in the front and rear, making it easy to maneuver.

The truck also features an aerial ladder which has a 100-foot vertical reach.

This is the second vehicle the fire department has added this year. In February, a 32-foot long custom “Pierce Enforcer” pumper, which costs $563,656, was added to the fleet.

Data from the Model S electric vehicle show it picked up speed for 3.5 seconds before crashing into the firetruck in suburban Salt Lake City, the report said. The driver manually hit the brakes a fraction of a second before impact.

Police suggested that the car was following another vehicle and dropped its speed to 55 mph (89 kph) to match the leading vehicle. They say the leading vehicle then likely changed lanes and the Tesla automatically sped up to its preset speed of 60 mph (97 kph) without noticing the stopped cars ahead.

Chief Allen said the new vehicle is a good buy for the city, especially considering it’s expected to be the LFD’s most-used vehicle for the next two decades.

“This pumper is high-tech,” Allen said. “It will provide a great deal of added safety to the firefighter/paramedics who are using it as well as to the citizens it is serving. Its technology will help with extending the life of the vehicle and making maintenance and upkeep more proficient.”

At more than 18,000 square feet, the proposed station would be the largest in the city, but some residents of the area have expressed concern about its proximity to elementary school.

"We took a look at this and we've been watching," Stoudt said. "There is some light unloading [of students] on the Penn Street side [of the school], and we'll work with the school district and the principal of the school here to address the concerns."
