Byron (MN) Fire Apparatus Mystery Solved

The mystery behind the firetruck that popped up recently off the Byron Frontage Road for sale has been solved. The truck was owned by Byron resident and Kasson businessman Jason Wilker, who owns Wilker Retaining Walls.
Wilker purchased the truck, a 2005 model, last fall at an auction in Glencoe and said it was a deal he just couldn't pass up.

Walton (IN) Community Volunteer Fire Department Adds Fire Apparatus

"There's nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer." Those are the words emblazoned on the sides of the Walton Community Volunteer Fire Department's new fire engine, expected to be in service by the end of this week.
Ryan Kunkle, assistant chief of the Walton Community Volunteer Fire Department, said the 2008 Sutphen fire engine was bought for $67,000 from St. John-based Fire Service Inc. and that it had formerly been used by a fire department in Brownsburg.

Kunkle said the department keeps two engines, a tanker truck, a rescue truck and a grass fire truck at its main station in Walton and then another engine, tanker truck and grass fire truck at its station on 200 East and 450 South.

Program to Explore Fire Tower History

LIVINGSTON MANOR - The public is invited to "Fire Towers from a Historical Perspective," an interactive presentation with Laurie Rankin, at 7 p.m. Sept. 15 at Morgan Outdoors in Livingston Manor.The program will begin by exploring why fire towers were needed, going back to the early 1900s on a national and state level.

Then Laurie will focus on the local area, particularly Red Hill Fire Tower, 8 miles northeast of Grahamsville, and Balsam Lake Mountain, 20 miles northeast of Livingston Manor.

Louisiana-Donated Fire Trucks Still in Use 16 years after 9/11

(WWL.com) -- After 9/11, then-Louisiana Governor Mike Foster started the "Bucks for Trucks" campaign, where Louisianans donated money to purchase a new fire truck for the Fire Department of New York City. Enough money was raised to build four fire trucks at Ferrera Fire Apparatus in Livingston Parish.

Enough money was raised to build four fire trucks at Ferrera Fire Apparatus in Livingston Parish. Former owner Chris Ferrera says $1.2 million was raised, and all of the trucks are still in use 16 years later.   


"Believe it or not, three are still in service with the city of New York," Ferrara said. "I was up there not too long ago and one of them was being serviced and it’s being used every day in the city of New York."


Ferrera says one truck was actually sent to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. It is currently in use by the Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office.
