"Custom built fire engines are more maneuverable with shorter wheel bases, have better braking, and more rigid frames which make them safer for the firefighters," Battalion Chief Jesse Buhs said. "They are known to hold up better in a department with a higher-call volume, resulting in less projected maintenance and greater longevity."

"Luckily, no one was hurt and the firefighters did exactly what we preach to the citizens: Make sure everybody was accounted for before they went in to extinguish the fire," Batallion Chief Willie Bailey with Fairfax County Fire Department told WTOP.

About 60 firefighters worked for about 25 minutes to extinguish the fire. The truck, which Bailey referred to as a rescue squad, was declared a total loss. The fire also damaged the roof of the station, he said. All told, the fire caused about $200,000 in damage.

Union Fire Chief Dale Yates said both firefighters were hospitalized following the wreck. Thomas Winery, the driver, had cuts and lacerations, and Clint Walker, the passenger, was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he was treated for a broken clavicle and shoulder blade. Both have been treated and released.

The department says the new engine couldn't have come soon enough.

"This is our second truck in a year now. We really needed some vehicles, so this truck will get used well. To me what it shows is the community coming together for their emergency services," said Fire Chief Louis Lamarche.
