A volunteer firefighter died Thursday while responding to a crash on Route 220 in Botetourt County, according to Virginia State Police. The Eagle Rock Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 220 at Catawba Creek Road.
Around 3:10 p.m., a 55-year-old fire department employee was backing up a firetruck to block the roadway when the truck hit another fire department member.

Roger Johns, 63, of Eagle Rock was serving as a ground guide when the truck backed into him. Johns later died at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Braintree (MA) Fire Receives Grant for Mobile Data Terminals

Braintree Mobile data terminals that put key information at the fingertips of firefighters as they respond to calls are now standard equipment on the town’s fire trucks. Firefighter Dan Cross, who helped write the application which led to the $66,000 grant for the purchase of the terminals, got a chance to see their benefits first hand when responding to a recent call in Braintree Highlands. The terminal gave firefighters not only the location of the nearest hydrant, but also the best route to get there.
At the East Braintree Fire Station on Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito announced the award of $2 million in grants to municipalities for information technology projects like the data terminals. The grants are awarded under the Baker-Polito administration’s Commonwealth Compact program.

Farm Credit Services of America donated life-saving grain bin rescue equipment to the North Platte Fire Department on Wednesday. The grain structure entry and rescue tube panels and accessory kit came from Outstate Data in Elbow Lake, Minnesota.
Craig Berg, a company representative and instructor, took the local firefighters through a staged rescue at Ag Valley Co-op.

"I can't thank Farm Credit Services of America enough for all they do for everybody," Berg said. "This year, just like last year, they are donating to 100 different fire departments across the five-state area."
