Seward, Herkimer Fire Department (NY) Unveil New Fire Apparatus

State Sen. James Seward, R-Oneonta secured a $250,000 grant through the State and Municipal Facilities Program to help purchase the new Pierce Saber 70 pumper truck.
The new pumper replaces the department’s 1987 E-One engine, which was taken out of service in December 2015.

Herkimer Fire Chief John Spanfelner said the pumper was delivered on April 27. He said it has since had radios and other equipment installed before it was put into service Wednesday evening.

Scipio-Republic Fire Department (OH) Purchases Fire Apparatus

Scipio-Republic Fire Department has purchased a 2017 Kenworth pumper-tanker and took delivery Thursday. Chief Jason Porter said the truck was a demonstration unit and is operational. He said it is "definitely a Cadillac." "We drove 14 long, crazy hours to Mississippi to look at it, tested it out," he said.
The truck has a 1,250-gallon pump, a 1,250-gallon tank and a rear water dumping mechanism.

Porter said the truck was about $258,000 from Deep South Fire Trucks in Seminary, Mississippi. The fire department has received funding from levies and had set aside money to put toward a truck.

Guntown (MS) Dedicates New Fire Apparatus

After saving money for almost a decade, the Guntown Volunteer Fire Department took delivery of a new Rosenbauer fire engine this week.

“We have been saving money for close to 10 years to buy a new truck,” said Fire Chief Larry McCoy. “It cost right at $400,000 and that doesn’t include any equipment.

The department was able to surplus the old engine, a 1999 model, and sell it to a South Carolina used apparatus company. While the salvage price didn't come close to buying a new truck, it did provide additional funds.

"The old truck still had low mileage and the pump was sound," said assistant Fire Chief Dale Vandevander. "It will be refurbished and make some small department a good truck."

Camden County (GA) Firefighters Concerned With Maintenance Issues and Failing Fire Apparatus

A group of current and former Camden County firefighters have come forward concerned about their department. They say the issues showed up in 2016 during a house fire on a rural county road.
Records obtained by First Coast News show more than 500 work orders for fire engines, tankers, and ambulances in 2015 and 2016.

Things like breaks not working properly, gangues resetting on a fire engine causing it to shut down, and water level indicators not accurately reflecting how much is in the tank. Almost half of the work took at least three months to fix. Some took up to a year.

Crews said the department has hired its own mechanic to catch up on repairs.
