East Alton Fire Department gets new wheels

EAST ALTON -East Alton is soon to see the fire department's new "big red" edition safeguarding the village streets. The East Alton Fire Department ushers in a new 2017 Ferrara fire apparatus custom-built to suit the department's needs, to more efficiently and safely serve the community.

“Safety of the public is one of the essentials we provide as local government. We expect the new truck will last for a long time. It will provide a more efficient service to the public,” stated East Alton Mayor Joe Slikwood.

The new apparatus is the sought-out combination of both pumper and light-duty rescue unit, fit with specific “bells and whistles”.

“The deck gun makes operations a lot easier, as its a one-man operation. Before it was a two man task, where a man had get on top of the truck,” said Fire Chief Rodney B. Palmer.

Palmer describes the deck gun as “one of the huge assets” of the new apparatus.

The new deck gun allows for wireless remote control ground operations, versus crew members previously operating the gun manually from truck’s roof. The deck gun spews 1,000 gallons of flowing water per minute and is accompanied by other features including a 1,500 gallon per minute pump and a 750 gallon water tank.

“As it (previous pumper truck) increases in age it increases in maintenance, which is more money. It’s just like a car, combining the two trucks increases safety and decreases fuel costs,” stated Palmer.

Cullman Firefighters Gearing Up for New Fire Station

Cullman may not have its third fire station just yet, but its larger force of 45 firefighters are gearing up to operate like they do. On Monday, the Cullman City Council approved Fire Chief Ed Reinhardt's request to increase the department's minimum staffing personnel per shift from nine to 13 firefighters.

Additionally, the council agreed to eliminate the department’s minimum weather staffing level with more manpower now on hand.

“Right now, we have 15 firefighters per shift with three shifts,” Reinhardt said. “We want to start running calls like we have that third engine, get the firefighters and dispatch used to it, so when the station is built, everyone is ready and prepared to take calls.”

The city got a SAFER grant that funds pay and benefits for 12 additional firefighters for two years. Cullman is currently in the second year of that grant, after which the city will have to pick up the costs to cover firefighters’ pay.

Officials had hoped the new fire station would be up and running by February, but delays have pushed the estimated completion to November.

Site preparation is underway on Alabama 157 near Merchants Bank. When it opens, officials believe it will improve emergency response on the north side which has been growing with new retail developments.

In her motion supporting the change, Council Pro Tem Jenny Folsom recommended the city give Mayor Woody Jacobs the authority to implement the new policy.

New fire station up and running in Timberlands

The City of Red Deer celebrated the opening of Fire Station #4 at its new location in Timberlands this morning. The station, which has been in operation since last Tuesday, was completed early and under budget for about $7.5 million, according to Fire Chief Brian Makey.

"This actually was a design that was put together by our staff," said Makey, noting firefighters visited several other departments to collect ideas for the Timberlands facility. "There's training components for high angle rescue, confined spaces, that are built right in this structure."

Makey added the location of the new fire station allows the City to continue to meet the standard for response times in new residential developments.

"From the time we get the call to the time we get to your door, it has to be ten minutes or less," he pointed out. "This was put specifically in a place where we are going to reach everywhere within that ten minute response time."

Fire Station #4 will serve the growing communities in Timberlands and Evergreen, as well as future developments in the East Hill area, accordiing to City Manager Craig Curtis.

Meantime, City officials the new Fire Station #3 is being built in Lancaster at 30 Avenue and Lees Street is expected to open in 2017.
