Buena Park (CA) Breaking Ground on $13 Million Fire Station that Burned Down

Four months after a fire destroyed the city's 50-year-old Station 61, city and Orange County Fire Authority officials are breaking ground Tuesday, May 2, on a $13 million replacement. Construction at the new location, 7440 La Palma Ave., should begin this week, city officials said.
To pay for the new station, the city – which owns all three firehouses OCFA operates out of in Buena Park – sold bonds, which will be paid back over the next 20 years at an annual cost of $750,000, officials said.

The new, single-story facility will have dorms, administration offices and upgraded amenities – but no fire pole, which the old station had, but rarely used. New showers and locker rooms will serve both genders.

Fire Station Dedicated in Honor of Kevin Bell

The city of Hartford rededicated the Blue Hills Avenue fire station in honor of a firefighter who died in the line of duty in 2014. Starting Sunday, on what would have been firefighter Kevin Bell's birthday, the Engine 16 station Blue Hills Avenue has But has a new name - the Kevin L.

“This city will always honor him, will always remember him, will always be grateful for his service and sacrifice,” said Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin (D).

A federal report found 10 factors led to Bell's death, including that his tank ran out of air. That report led to improvements across the Hartford Fire Department.

“We will continue with forward progression, with structure, organization, discipline and accountability. That is something I can promise you today,” said Hartford Fire Chief Reginald Freeman.

This fire station is located in the neighborhood that Kevin Bell called home.

Fire Department Dedicates New Truck

A new half-million dollar fire rig is officially in service for the Battle Creek Fire Department after a dedication ceremony Saturday. Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz presided over the open house and dedication at Station 3 at 222 Cliff St., where the new truck, Rescue 3, is now housed.

Schmaltz said the $493,000 truck has special equipment and will respond as a rescue vehicle but also carries water and pump for fires. It is the first of two trucks being added to the fire department fleet. A truck with a 100-foot ladder is being outfitted and firefighters are beginning to train on it before it is placed at Station 6 on Capital Avenue Southwest in May.

The new Rescue 3 truck has only two inches of clearance to enter the old station, the chief said.
