Tractor trailer strikes rescue truck, firefighters on I-65

A tractor trailer lost control on I-65 near Smiths Grove, Kentucky Sunday morning, striking a fire rescue truck and two firemen. The Smiths Grove Fire Department had responded to multiple collisions due to icy road conditions on Interstate 65 near mile marker 38.

Just before 6:30 a.m., Kumar Amandeep, 33, of West Hill, California, was operating a 2017 Freightliner tractor trailer and traveling southbound when he lost control of his semi.

He struck a 2006 Kenworth Fire Rescue truck that was on the shoulder with its emergency equipment activated.

Amandeep’s semi-truck then separated from the trailer and overturned, striking Chief Kenneth Priddy and Assistant Chief Steven Wilson with the Smiths Grove Fire Department

Asst. Chief Wilson was transported to the Medical Center in Bowling Green with non-life threatening injuries.

Bed bugs infesting Chester city fire stations

Sources tell us FOX 29 bed bugs are biting first responders in the fire houses in the city of Chester. They're quite worried, and they could be unwittingly bringing those bed bugs into your homes. So what's happening it to stop it?

It was about a week ago when a couple of Chester firefighters at Station 82 started complaining of bug bites.

Well it wasn't long until they realized those bites came from bed bugs.  In their sleeping quarters that forced them to toss their beds into the trash.

Fox 29 has now learned both of Chester's firehouses are now infested with bed bugs.

Box springs and mattresses from Chester Fire Station were tossed to the curb after the nasty discovery of bed bugs.

Several sources telling FOX 29 more than a week ago two firefighters were bitten as they slept in their bunks at the Chester fire Station Number 82.

Several firefighters tell us they informed headquarters about the problem.  What happened?  The station was given cans of bed bug spray according to sources.

$3 million in TIF dollars used to finance SB fire station

It looks like the City of South Bend will soon have its first LEED Certified building. Funding was approved today for the $3 million project. LEED stands for leadership in energy and environmental design. A planned new Olive Street fire station, complete with solar panels and a running track, is shooting for silver status.

Firefighting can apparently be a dangerous job—even when firefighters aren’t fighting fires. “Recent studies that have been done have shown a correlation between cancer and firefighting,” said South Bend Fire Chief Stephen Cox.

Those who will work at South Bend’s new fire station four should sleep easier, not only because the new building will have eight bedrooms instead of two, but because the living quarters in general will be better buffered from the business portion.

“Some of the things the folks in the fire service have been doing of late is segregating contaminated equipment, vehicles, the diesel exhaust from the trucks and everything from the living quarters In a way that the firefighters are minimally exposed to it,” said Chief Cox.

The new station is designed to be ahead of its time, with solar panels, all LED lighting and 100 percent on-site water retention.

The new building is designed to replace an old building that had fallen behind the times in many ways.

“So the building was built in the early 70-s when the South Bend Fire Department didn't have any female firefighters, so the building wasn't constructed to house more than one sex, or one Gender, of firefighter,” Chief Cox said.
