Alpharetta (GA) to Pay $2.3M for Firefighting Vehicles

The Alpharetta City Council has approved spending $2.3 million for two replacement fire engines and a fire aerial ladder truck. The apparatus will be built by Pierce Manufacturing Inc., purchased from Ten-8 Fire and Safety Equipment of Georgia and financed by Banc of America Public Capital Corp., according to a staff report prepared for the Council.
The engines, also known as “pumpers,” and the ladder truck will replace two existing Pierce engines and a Pierce ladder truck acquired in 2007. The existing units will be placed in the Public Safety Department’s reserve fleet. Another pair of pumpers and a ladder truck in the reserve fleet will be declared surplus.

Alpharetta has eight fire apparatus on active duty: six engines, one ladder truck and one air/light truck. The new units will be paid for by Banc of America capital leasing financing with a term of 10 years and interest rate of 2.075 percent for the engines, and term of 13 years and interest rate of 2.25 percent for the ladder truck.

Ephrata's Ladder Tower Part of $36.3M Sale to Michigan Firm

Aerial fire-apparatus manufacturer Ladder Tower in Ephrata is being sold as part of a $36.3 million transaction, it was announced Tuesday. Ladder Tower's owner, Smeal Fire Apparatus, has agreed to be acquired by Spartan Motors. The sale is expected to be finalized in January.
Ladder Tower, which makes aerial ladders and aerial platforms, has about 50 employees at its 68 Cocalico Creek Road plant, a Spartan spokeswoman said. Spartan, based in Charlotte, Michigan, supplies chassis to Smeal, based in Snyder, Nebraska.

Besides plants in Snyder and Ephrata, Smeal also has plants in Neligh, Nebraska, and Delavan, Wisconsin.

Smeal’s annual revenues are $100 million.

Spartan said the acquisition will speed the turnaround of its emergency response division, extend the division’s geographic reach and expand its product offerings.

Smeal said becoming part of a larger, well-capitalized publicly held company ensures continued investment in product development and continued delivery of products and services.

Spartan has 1,800 employees and posts annual revenues of $550 million.
