New Fire Apparatus Improves Services for Putney Volunteer (KY) Fire Department

Last fall was a blur of ridge-top infernos, smoke-filled valleys, non-stop alarms and sleepless nights for members of the Putney Volunteer Fire Department. When the outbreak of wildfires happened in Harlan County starting in October and lasting through November, the biggest fires were reported in Putney Fire Department's district.
"I don't know what we would have done without the assistance of other fire departments within the county and the state, as well as the help of the National Guard," said Putney Volunteer Fire Department Chief Shawn Hightower. "It ran us ragged. It just about depleted this small station. We're grateful for emergency funding to offset some costs, but last fall just goes to show how important our small fire departments are and how badly volunteer firefighters are still needed."

Wilmington (DE) Fire Department Goes Digital

After a city audit revealed a flawed inventory system, the Wilmington Fire Department is venturing into new territory: technology. For the first time, the department is working to track its equipment in digital form rather than paper. "We have a large amount of assets," said Fire Chief Michael Donohue, who was appointed in January.
The 2015 audit, obtained by The News Journal, showed that poor record keeping, insufficient controls and outdated tracking systems could put the department at risk of "undetected theft and loss, unexpected shortages of critical items, and unnecessary purchases of items already on hand."

Auditors tried to find 11 fixed assets from the fire department's inventory lists. Seven were not present in their assigned location, the audit said. None of them could be traced to the finance department's fixed asset list.

Lake County Fire Rescue Fire Apparatus Named After Baby Abandoned at Fire Station

The firefighters at Lake County Fire Rescue have named one of their trucks "Colleen," in honor of a Safe Haven baby dropped off at the firehouse in 2006. "A car pulls up in the driveway, so I stepped outside and met the car and this young lady just walked up and handed me a baby carriage, and it was a little girl sleeping," explained Battalion Chief Dan Miller.
Colleen and her family were present at the dedication of the truck on Friday and were reunited with Miller, who was on duty when she was delivered to Station 112.
