Fire Apparatus Destroyed in Victorian (Australia) Grass Fire

A fire truck has been destroyed as crews battle to bring a bushfire under control near Swan Hill, in Victoria's north-west. The 400-hectare fire remains out of control in open country and is being fanned by strong, erratic winds.
Two New South Wales water bombers have been dispatched to assist 30 Victorian trucks and eight aircraft already battling the blaze ahead of a late wind change this afternoon.

Victoria's Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said one of the trucks was burnt after flames came over the top of it but no one was badly hurt.

Commissioner Lapsley said the fire was a warning for the season ahead.

"We always said that will be late December, January and February will be the critical period and that will play out to be exactly that," he said.

Hancock (MI) Adding Brand-New Pumper to Fleet

There will soon be a new fire truck at the Hancock Fire Department, and according to Mark Dennis it's a good investment. Dennis, a Hancock firefighter and a member of the department's Truck Committee, said the $357,000 2017 pumper truck is being constructed at Custom Fab & Body of Marion, Wisconsin.
Dennis said the new truck will replace a 1999 pumper truck, which was recently sold to the Franklin-Quincy Fire Department with the intention of getting a new truck for Hancock. Because of a mutual aid agreement, that truck will be available if needed until the new truck arrives.

"If we did have a fire in Hancock, they would respond," he said.

With the new pumper truck, Dennis said the department will have three vehicles, including a 2005 pumper and a 2000 ladder truck, which also carries water.

As the other trucks reach their expected age of effective use, Dennis said the city will consider replacing them.

The new truck will hold 1,000 gallons of water and 25 gallons of foam concentrate, which is mixed with water. It will have a 1,250 gallons-per-minute pump with a compressed air foam system, a cab, which can seat up to five firefighters in full gear, 5,000-watt generator, which will provide electricity for power tools and a telescoping light tower, which will rise 20 feet above the truck and will rotate 360 degrees.

Hoses aren't part of the package for the new truck, either, Dennis said.

"We have all of our hoses," he said.

Dennis said he and other members of the department have taken trips to Wisconsin to see the progress of the truck construction.

Spencer Manufacturing Builds CAFS Pumper-Tanker for Michigan Fire Department

By Alan M. Petrillo

The St. John's (MI) Fire Department needed to replace a 25-year-old top-mount pumper, but with daytime response for the volunteer fire department being limited, it wanted a vehicle that could carry the most water possible on a single rear axle.

"The vehicle would run second behind our 2006 Ford F-550 mini pumper with a Darley 1,250-gallon-per-minute (gpm) pump, a 250-gallon water tank, and a compressed air foam system (CAFS), says Jordan Whitford, a firefighter and the head of the St. John's truck committee.

St. John's has 20 volunteers operating out of a single station who get paid a monthly salary if they make 75 percent of the calls that month, Whitford points out. "We cover the city of St. John's, Bingham Township, and part of Bengal Township," he says. "The city is a mix of residential and commercial, with a couple of factories; Bengal is rural residential; and Bingham has residential and commercial structures."

Besides the Darley mini pumper, the department also has a 2011 Rosenbauer Ford F-550 light rescue and a 1984 E-ONE 85-foot aerial ladder quint with a Hale 1,500-gpm pump and a 300-gallon water tank.

"We have hydrants in a lot of our fire protection area," Whitford says, "but we wanted a pumper-tanker that would allow us to drop 2,000 gallons of water into a portable water tank and then call in other tankers behind it if necessary. We also wanted to carry over the CAFS capabilities from our mini pumper."

Grant Spencer, general manager of Spencer Manufacturing, which got the contract for the new pumper-tanker, says that the St. John's truck committee wanted the vehicle built on the shortest wheelbase possible. "So, we built them a pumper-tanker on a 242-inch wheelbase, with a width of 100 inches, an overall length of 36 feet, and an overall height of nine feet six inches," Spencer says. "The pumper-tanker has a Darley 1,500-gpm top-mount pump, a Darley Auto CAFS, a 2,000-gallon water tank, and a FoamPro foam system on a Spartan MFD custom chassis with an APR polypropylene body."

Ahren Taszreak, vice president of sales and operations for Kodiak Emergency Vehicles, who sold the pumper-tanker to St. John's, says that the fire department liked the fact that both Spencer Manufacturing and Spartan bodies were made in Michigan, as well as Spencer's ability to custom design the rig for them. "They wanted the longest vehicle possible on a single axle while carrying as much water as possible," Taszreak says. "We customized the entire truck from the cab all the way back to the tail for them."

Taszreak notes that inside the crew cab St. John's wanted three rear-fa
