ORANGE CITY, Iowa | The Orange City Fire Department will break ground Friday on a $3.15 million expansion that will nearly quadruple the size of its station.

The project will expand the station from its current size of approximately 4,000 square feet to nearly 15,000. Crews will remodel approximately 3,840 square feet of the existing structure, which was built in 1973.

The groundbreaking, to be held at 10 a.m. Friday, follows the Orange City Council's approval of a $2.64 million construction contract Monday.

"It's another big step forward," said Orange City Fire Chief Denny Vander Wel. "You get these hurdles and you go through them, and then you get the real positive feeling that everything just seems to click."

Vander Wel said the current station's size limits the fire department's work space, training space and storage space for larger, newer equipment.

Forrest City police are looking for the shooter who shot up a fire substation that's set to open in August.

The shooting happened Monday, and today police announced a major reward in the case.

FOX13's Jeremy Pierre learned residents in Forrest City are tired of people who misuse guns and cause unnecessary damage.

Longtime Forrest City resident Henry Peacock is behind fixing the plumbing in the city's newest fire substation.

He said it's a mystery why anyone would want to damage the building by shooting it.

Peacock told FOX13 the shooting of the building comes as no surprise.

"It makes no sense," said Peacock. "It's too many guns."

Forrest City Police said they discovered the exterior of the substation shot multiple times Monday.

The Forrest City police and fire departments declined to comment on camera about the shooting.

Lockington Unveils New Fire Engine

LOCKINGTON - The Lockington Volunteer Fire Association (LVFA) will be celebrating 70 years with a

The engine, which is a 2016 upper tanker, cost roughly $420,000 and it took Lockington two decades years to save the money for it. Through tax levies and fundraising by the fire department, the goal of replacing their now-40-year-old fire engine has become a reality.

“It’s pretty well to the end of its life span. The next, newer truck is 19 years old … and it’ll be second out for a spare or backup,” Lockington Fire Chief Jon Adams said.

In addition to being a newer model, the new fire engine will be able to haul water to fire scenes.

“This new engine will provide a lot more capability. It’ll be able to haul more water and it should provide excellent firefighting services to the community for a long time.”

According to a press release, the LVFA was established in 1946 with the help of William Forsythe following a fire at the Forsythe Dairy.
