City Considers Buying Used Fire Truck for $1.1 Million

PETOSKEY - City council members will consider purchasing a replacement for an aging aerial fire truck when they meet Monday, Sept. 19. A regular council meeting begins at 7 p.m. Monday at city hall, 101 E. Lake St. In August, city voters approved a new, 0.75-mill property tax levy aimed at updating the city's fire fleet.

Sutphen Corp., an Ohio-based fire apparatus maker that built most of the city's current fire trucks, recently notified Petoskey officials that it has a 2016-model platform truck — which has been used as a demonstrator unit, and is equipped with a 100-foot aerial device — available for purchase. City leaders propose that the council authorize this truck's purchase at a cost of about $1.09 million.

The truck has logged about 15,000 miles — mainly from traveling around the country for demonstration purposes — but has not been used for firefighting. It would come with the same warranty Sutphen offers on a brand-new apparatus, and could be delivered to Petoskey in about four weeks if the city moves ahead with the purchase. The demonstrator model would cost about $100,000 less than a similar built-to-order truck, which would require about a year's time to be manufactured and delivered.

Petoskey Department of Public Safety representatives recently traveled to Ohio to inspect the truck, test-drive it and try out its aerial ladder and fire pump. City officials note that the truck meets Petoskey's specifications.

The truck's $1.09 million price tag reflects a $30,000 trade-in allowance for Petoskey's old aerial truck, and includes about $16,000 worth of equipment needed to put the truck in service.

After NYC, More Bombs found in NJ

Hours after five pipe bombs were discovered near a train station in Elizabeth, N.J., federal agents and the police raided a home nearby early Monday morning as part of the sweeping search for the person or people responsible for Saturday night's bombing in Manhattan.

Hours before Mr. Rahami’s name was released, the police discovered five pipe bombs near a train station in Elizabeth, detonating one of them overnight as they sought to disarm them. Before dawn, agents conducted a series of raids in the New Jersey city.

Federal Bureau of Investigation  agents with dogs and Elizabeth police officers swarmed a residential neighborhood of low-rise apartment buildings, multiple family homes and small businesses.

Law enforcement officers closed and evacuated the La Bottega Dei Sapori Deli Grocery and Sonia’s Beauty, a salon to the left of the restaurant, as well as HR Computer and Communication Services Inc.

Mr. de Blasio said New Yorkers should be prepared to see a large increase in police presence across the city.

“In the coming hours we are going to be able to say a lot more about what happened here,” Mr. de Blasio said Monday during an interview on “Good Morning America.” “It is certainly leaning more in the direction that this was a specific act of terror.”

Milwaukee Fire Station Burglarized While Firefighters Out Answering Call

MILWAUKEE - Laptops, tablets, and cell phones were stolen from a Milwaukee fire station as firefighters were out answering a call. That call turned out to be a false alarm. According to Milwaukee police, around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, September 15th firefighters at Station 34, located at at 62nd and Burleigh, responded to the fire call and then left the scene.

When firefighters returned after learning the call was a false alarm, police say they discovered the station had been burglarized. Personal property was taken from the firehouse including laptop computers, tablets and cell phones.

Police say none of the City of Milwaukee property, such as televisions, firefighting equipment, or other items from the firehouse, were stolen.

According to police, the burglar(s) were able to enter through an open window.

Firefighters are now taking the proper precautions at the fire station to make sure this does not happen again.

Authorities Investigate Explosion in Manhattan

Firefighters and the police were responding to a report of an explosion in Manhattan on 23rd Street between Avenue of the Americas and Seventh Avenue on Saturday night, the authorities said. Information about the source of the explosion was not immediately available. The explosion was reported around 8:30 p.m.

As the authorities sought to identify what had caused the explosion, they described the second device as a pressure cooker resembling the one used in the deadly Boston Marathon bombings in 2013, according to a police official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss a continuing investigation.

It was unclear whether the blast on West 23rd Street had been caused by the same type of explosive.

In the immediate aftermath, the police shut down a swath of Manhattansouth of Midtown. The area from 14th Street to 32nd Street was closed to traffic between Fifth and Eighth Avenues. But by 7 a.m., only 23rd Street remained closed.

A grim Mr. de Blasio, speaking at a news conference at the scene around 11:15 p.m., said “injuries are significant.” But for the moment, he said, none of them were life-threatening.
