Cordova (AL) New Rescue Apparatus Arrives

The Cordova Fire Department's new rescue truck is now in service.
The department purchased the 2016 F-550 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

Fire Chief Dean Harbison said the truck will be a great assest for the department and the community.

The truck seats up to six people and has more capabilities than the 1995 year-model ambulance that it is replacing.

"Having this new truck allows us to carry all of our medical equipment for basic and advanced life support. It also carries several rescue tools such as the "Jaws of Life" which we use to cut people free from wrecked vehicles, lifting airbags which can lift large vehicles or equipment and rescue struts which are used to stabalize these large vehicles and collapsed walls. It can also be used to fight small fires with its onboard water and foam systems," Harbison said.

AFG awarded the department $118,096 to upgrade its fleet in May 2015. The city invested $12,000 in the vehicle. The total cost of the truck is $130,549.

New Ambulance Funding Plan to Lawrence (IN) Council

A new plan to fund the ambulance service will go to the Lawrence City Council Tuesday. Right now, the city has difficulty keeping EMTs and paramedics from leaving the department for cities with higher wages.
Right now, the city has difficulty keeping EMTs and paramedics from leaving the department for cities with higher wages.

To combat that, Lawrence is proposing giving them a $2-an-hour pay hike. The Democrat-controlled council originally approved the idea, before voting it down.

"Our change of heart is in our statement," said Councilor Elizabeth Wheeler. "We're sticking to it until December, when we can evaluate the data used."

The council says it wants to further review the funding proposal and the impact of the increased revenue.

Councilor Rick Wells has decided to go against his own party on behalf of public safety.

Fire Ravages Great Cacapon (WV) Fire Station

No one was injured Tuesday when a fire ravaged the Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Co. in Great Cacapon, W.Va. Firefighters from several departments in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia responded.
"I was able to save two apparatus," Great Cacapon Fire Chief Matt Grimley said. "We lost a tanker and a brush truck ... We lost all of our turnout gear. I'm the only one who has a set of gear left."

The fire was reported shortly before noon at the multi-bay fire station at 179 Spring St.

Grimley said Tuesday afternoon at the scene that the Office of the State Fire Marshal was investigating the cause.

"Until the fire marshal gets in there and is able to do his job, we're not going to be able to determine anything," Grimley said.

He said the building, which consisted of concrete blocks and a wooden-frame roof, was insured.
