Salado (TX) VFD Receives Grant for New Brush Fire Apparatus

The Salado Volunteer Fire Department received a $200,000 grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service for a new brush truck. The new truck will replace a smaller 20-year-old department vehicle. "The new brush truck is larger and has more options that make it safer for the firefighters," Salado VFD Chief Shane Berrier said in a released on Tuesday.
The brush truck has a 1,000-gallon water tank, 20-gallon foam tank, a bumper turret nozzle and an assortment of hoses that will increase the department's capabilities to protect the community. The truck will be used for fighting wildland or grass fires.

Berrier said it allows firefighters to fight a wildland fire when only one volunteer is available.

Haldimand (Canada) Wheat-Field Fire Destroys Fire Apparatus, Damages Another

One fire truck was destroyed and another badly damaged during a blaze that burned through a 50-acre wheat field Friday afternoon. The fire started just after 3 p.m., at a farm on Third Line in a rural area between Caledonia and Hagersville, said Haldimand County Fire Chief Rob Grimwood.
A farmer had been cutting hay, and that appeared to have ignited the field, Grimwood added.

No one was injured in the fire, which completely destroyed one pumper truck and significantly damaged a tanker truck, Grimwood said.

"As much as we've destroyed two trucks here, this is a big victory," he said. "This was an incredibly large fire."

Grimwood estimated the loss of the two vehicles at more than $500,000.

Winds shifted quickly and the trucks were set ablaze while they were being repositioned, Grimwood said.

This was the first time a fire truck had been destroyed during a blaze in Haldimand County, he added.

Blown Tire Pulled Shelton (NE) Fire Apparatus into Grain Bin

A blown tire on a Shelton Rural Fire truck is to blame for the truck crashing into a grain bin southeast of Shelton.
At about 4:35 p.m. Friday, the 2003 Freightliner fire truck was on its way back to Shelton from a vehicle fire on Interstate 80 when the driver’s side front tire blew out, a Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office accident report says. The truck veered off the road to the left, hit a grain bin owned by Dan Riley of Shelton, and came to rest on a mound of dirt on its wheels.

Shelton Volunteer firefighter Mark Lovelace was driving the truck at the time of the crash. He and volunteer firefighter Jason Ruyle were transported to CHI Health Good Samaritan where they were treated for injuries and released.

Deputies estimated damage to the grain bin at $20,000, while the truck was estimated to be a total loss.
