Federal Grant will Help Upgrade Howland (OH) Fire Department Equipment

The Howland Township Fire Department will use a $133,572 federal grant to upgrade equipment that helps keep firefighters and citizens safe.
Congressman Tim Ryan announced on Wednesday that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security approved the grant from its Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Howland Fire Chief James Pantalone says the grant will be used to replace older models of front line fire apparatus to include improved self-contained breathing apparatus packs, bottles, face pieces and voice amplifiers.

“As the annual capital fund budgets of fire departments decrease, these grants continue to assist with keeping fire departments budget in the black and keeps firefighters safe on the job,” said Chief Pantalone.

The goal of the AFG program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and emergency medical service organizations.

Operations and Safety grants can be used for professional training, wellness and fitness programs equipment, personal protective equipment, modifications to facilities, and supplies that support firefighting and non-affiliated EMS operations and safety.

Woonsocket (SD) Fire Department Receives Local Aid for Fire Apparatus

The Town & Country Fire Department of Woonsocket upgraded a piece of its equipment in the form of a $265,000 fire truck.
The fire department will be formally accepting a check from Central Electric Cooperative next week, which it will be paying back as a zero percent interest loan -- saving thousands of dollars.

Central Electric Cooperative in Mitchell applied for a grant on behalf of the fire department through the United States Department of Agriculture.

The cooperative received a $212,000 rural economic development grant to turn into a zero percent interest loan for the fire department.

On Saturday, the fire department will be holding an open house for the community to check out the new fire truck and other new equipment. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the fire department in Woonsocket.

The fire department received the truck last November, according to Fire Chief Travis Coulthard. It replaced a 33-year-old truck that no longer met fire standards.

Coulthard said the department had been looking at purchasing a new truck for the past couple years. The previous truck has been outdated and needed the upgrade.

The Woonsocket fire department has four trucks total, along with 27 volunteer firefighters, Coulthard said. The entire department is 100 percent volunteer.

The new truck has features the previous truck didn't, including some pump and roll capabilities, according to Coulthard.

The monthly payments from the fire department will go back into the rural electric economic development (REED) loan fund and made available for other economic development and community projects, according to Ken Schlimgen, the general manager at the Central Electric Cooperative.

Rosenbauer South Dakota Receives Presidential Award for Export Successes - Fire Apparatus

LYONS, SD — U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker recently presented Rosenbauer America’s South Dakota division with the President’s “E” Award for Exports at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. The President’s “E” Award is the highest recognition any U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports.

“Rosenbauer South Dakota has demonstrated a sustained commitment to export expansion. The “E” Awards Committee was very impressed with Rosenbauer South Dakota’s innovative firefighting technologies. The company’s customization of its product line to meet client needs in export markets was also particularly notable. Their achievements have undoubtedly contributed to national export expansion efforts that support the U.S. economy and create American jobs,” said Secretary Pritzker in her congratulatory letter to the company announcing its selection as an award recipient.

Rosenbauer America is one of the leading manufacturers of fire apparatus in North America. They provide state-of-the-art fire apparatus for fire departments all over the world. In North America, Rosenbauer incorporates the international strength and innovation of a global company with top American manufacturing firms and employees nearly 700 people in the U.S. alone.

“Exporting continues to be the foundation of our sales growth, and we are honored to receive the “E” Award,” said Harold Boer, president of Rosenbauer America. “Over the years our export sales have increased steadily and helped us to secure our position in the fire industry as a fire apparatus supplier for the world.”

In 1961, President Kennedy signed an executive order reviving the World War II “E” symbol of excellence to honor and provide recognition to America's exporters. Today, Secretary Pritzker honored 123 U.S. companies with the President’s “E” Award for their outstanding work to reduce barriers to foreign markets and to open the door to more trade around the world.

In 2015, U.S. exports totaled $2.23 trillion, accounting for nearly 13 percent of U.S. GDP. Nationally, exports contributed to the U.S. economy, supporting an estimated 11.5 million jobs.

U.S. companies are nominated for the “E” Awards through the Department of Commerce’s U.S. Commercial Service office network, located within the Department’s International Trade Administration, with offices in 108 U.S. cities and more than 70 countries.  Record years of successive export growth and an applicant’s demonstration of an innovative international marketing plan that led to the increase in exports is a significant factor in selecting the winners.
