Madison (AL) Ambulance Manufacturer Debuts Vehicles for Children

An Alabama vehicle manufacturer recently developed two ambulances to help kids in need in south Florida. Excellance, which launched in Madison in 1975, has finished production on two custom rides for Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami. The emergency vehicles serve the area's only licensed specialty hospital for children with more than 650 physicians and 130 pediatric sub-specialists.
The bright blue ambulances are among Excellance's most custom to date, with a CritiCool-Therapeutic Hypothermia System, Olympic blanket warmer, LED lighting and a Stryker Power load system capable of lifting up to 700 pounds.

The vehicles, which have heart and teddy bear graphics to match the hospital's medical helicopter, can transport up to two cots, have four air-conditioning systems, feature a DVD player and screen for long-distance traveling, and are equipped with two hydraulic oxygen/medical air lifts.

Excellance said they also have a FireCom Intercom System, which facilitates communication between medics and the driver during transport. An Engel Medical refrigerator is on board to keep IV fluids and medications at the right temperatures during storage.

There is an electric step at the side entry door for easy entry, an Air Ride System, cab radio with GPS and an on-board Wi-Fi router inside the vehicles.

The company makes rescue trucks, command/communications units, bomb squad units, roll-off P.O.D. modules, hazardous materials vehicles, and special test vehicles for the U.S. Department of Defense. Excellance's Mobile Stroke Unit is one of only a couple existing in the world with technology to help victims receive the fastest, highest-quality care during a stroke.

Pierce Manufacturing Surprises School with Fire Apparatus Visit

Fifth- and sixth-grade students in the Fox Valley were surprised by an impromptu field trip that rolled up to their front door.

Pierce Manufacturing says it received fan mail from an employee’s son. The letter raved about the fire trucks built at the Appleton plant.

"We surprised him and his class got to come out and take a look at the fire truck and see how the bells and whistles work on that, and it was just an exciting time to kind of do something special like that because of the special products that are built at Pierce," Dan Meyer of Pierce Manufacturing said.

Waukomis (OK) Firefighter Injured Fire Apparatus Overturns

One man was injured after a Waukomis fire truck ran off the road Thursday afternoon near Bison while responding to a fire call. The Waukomis firefighter was transported to Integris Bass Baptist Health Center after being trapped inside the truck for about 30 minutes.
The water tanker was traveling south on Leona Mitchell toward Osborne Road when it went off the right side of the road and rolled, coming to rest on its side.

Two firefighters were inside, and one was able to get out while the other was pinned. The pinned fireman was extricated. He was able to walk to a stretcher and then was taken to Bass.

Avon Protection Mi-TIC S Gets NFPA Stamp of Approval

Avon TIC

The latest addition to Avon Protection’s argus thermal imaging range, the Mi-TIC S, has passed all the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements and is now certified compliant to the latest edition of NFPA 1801.

The NFPA is the world’s leading advocate on fire prevention and an authoritative source on public safety. The NFPA 1801:2013 standard specifies design, performance, testing, and certification requirements for thermal imaging cameras used by the fire service during emergency incident operations so firefighters can be confident that there will be a usable thermal image when they need it most.

Mark Ridsdale, Regional Sales Manager at Avon Protection, commented, “The Mi-TIC S is the lightest large screen camera ever developed and we are delighted it now has NFPA 1801 certification. The camera is already in service with many fire and rescue services, having been selected as the best tool for the job by scoring highly on image quality, image, and video recording ability, its physical size and the way it easily integrates with firefighter PPE.”

Firefighter using TIC

Avon’s argus Mi-TIC S is the world’s smallest thermal imager to feature a large-format, high-resolution display for advanced firefighting applications. The camera provides a crystal clear image with a superb dynamic range: you can clearly view extremely high temperatures up to 1100ºC (2000ºF) and at the same time see very low temperature objects, which is ideal for casualty searches.

Weighing approximately 870g (1lb 15oz) the argus Mi-TIC S is a small format thermal imager that can be easily and comfortably held in the palm of your hand. Unlike many thermal imagers, the argus Mi-TIC S design allows it to be worn in multiple ways – in the hand, inside a pocket, clipped outside a pocket, clipped, to a lanyard or hung around the neck.

With a thumb-operated green on/off button and superb start up time of 5 seconds, the argus Mi-TIC S is simple to use, and the enhanced feature set includes a laser pointer to aid communication and an electronic compass for greater scene awareness.
